You either love it or you hate it, but one thing is clear—it is impossible to not notice Chinese artist 岳敏君 Yue Minjun’s works, which depict men frozen in laughters.

The large sculpture in the foreground is part of a series titled “The Tao of Laughter,” which was previously on view in Hong Kong at Harbour City in 2012. They were inspired by Chinese traditional philosophical text 道德經 Tao Te Ching [1] written by 老子 Laozi, which supports the power of laughter as a path to inner peace.

Yue is commonly associated with the “Cynical Realism” by art critics. The painting in the background can be seen earlier in the stream [2].

Even if you do not follow the art world, it is hard to not notice the works by Chinese artist 岳敏君 YUE Minjun—a man in tighty whities frozen in his laughter would put a smile in anyone’s face.

The men depicted in his paintings and sculptures are in fact the artist himself, and they are seen doing all kinds of activities which read more WTF than reality. If his work features more than one person, it would be a whole array of them. The joy is so overdone that it seems more like irony than reality. And that seems to be the artist’s intention, as his work has been described by theorist Li Xianting as “a self-ironic response to the spiritual vacuum and folly of modern-day China.”

Art critics have often associated Yue with the Cynical Realism art movement in contemporary Chinese art, although he himself rejects the label, while at the same time “doesn't concern himself about what people call him.”

In 2012 the owner of lululemon athletic (Chip Wilson) purchased the bronze sculptures to be a permanent installation in Morton Park for the enjoyment of Vancouver citizens and visitors. Thanks Chip. It is a lovely addition to the Vancouver public art scene!

You may not know this sculpture by name, but chances are you’ve seen it. A-maze-ing Laughter consists of 14 enormous bronze statues – in all different poses – of a shirtless guy laughing hysterically.

The Vancouver park board has officially agreed to let the sculpture stay in its current location, in tiny Morton Park, right next to English Bay. The park board has also said it will work with community groups to raise the funds needed to buy A-maze-ing Laughter.

The installation of 14 bronze laughing figures consists of 7 images repeated twice, the signature trademark of artist Yue Minjun.

2013 is the beginning of a new era at the Vancouver Biennale. Planning has begun on the international outreach strategy for the 2013-15 exhibition which will feature national and city pavilions. The working title of the next exhibition is “Open Boarders Crossroads Vancouver" and will unveil throughout Metro Vancouver in the Spring & Summer of 2014.

Yue Minjun lives in Beijing China. The 14 bronze figures and the other Biennale pieces were installed by Protech Industrial Movers for the 2009-2011 exhibition.
