Hoffstadt Bridge over Hoffstadt Creek is the longest and tallest of fourteen bridges on the Spirit Lake Memorial Highway ( Hwy 504) at Mount St. Helens. It is the tallest bridge on a State Highway in Washington State and 3rd tallest in the Northwest at 370 ft above the ground below.

1. Steel truss members are being installed between piers. Temporary towers hold the truss up until all the connections are made. Then the towers are removed and the completed truss will support its own weight, plus the bridge deck on top.

2. Crews are completing the truss section between two piers. The cantilever section from one pier over Hoffstadt Creek will be built next.

3. The lower deck between two piers is erected using cranes to lift each steel member, then it is bolted into place. Each bolt is tested for proper tightness.

4. Concrete is poured into forms on a pier. Attached to the other pier is the stair scaffolding for the crew to climb to reach the top.

5. Only a few steel truss members are needed to close the span. Due to the difficult terrain and height of the piers, temporary support towers could not be used here, so the truss was cantilevered from each side til they met at the center.

At 2,340 feet (713 meters) long and 370 feet (113 meters) high, the Hoffstadt Creek Bridge is the largest of the 14 new bridges built for State Route 504 - The Spirit Lake Memorial Highway. Note that logging trucks were used in this scale drawing because cars are too small to see.

Route 503 is on the same council tender as the 504/5. The 503 only runs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Obviously then, the 504/5 run on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

This wasn't the same Solo as the 503 on Friday, but it was the same driver!

47311 is seen here crossing the infamous Hindhead traffic lights, by now four minutes late (and at the same time the 030 coach I was wanting to see was due which was worrying!), despite arriving at the traffic lights just 1 minute late... I'd never realised before (well, I've never though of it to be honest), that the A3 gets two "goes" per cycle of traffic lights.

The new Hindhead Tunnel is due to open later this month.

(Incidentally, the Flickr map is convinced this part of the A3 is dual carriageway! At least it got the place name right for once.)
