Infinite Viewing

MattPenning posted a photo:

Earlier, in a section of this art museum dedicated to American paintings, I saw a gentlemen with about $12,000 worth of Leica camera equipment hanging around his neck, take a photograph of a painting with his cell phone, flash and all. I never once saw him pick up his fine camera instrument and use it. I was gobsmacked.

Here, I was equally stunned, but at the composition that unfolded before my eyes.

My Karen Sue, my lovely bride, my lover of life and all things beautiful, was contemplating one of the stunning photographs that were part of a special collection, showing the evolution of photography from the earliest Daguerreotypes to inkjet prints. I quickly pulled my own cell phone out and grabbed this image, fearing that I would lose the moment if I spent the extra few seconds to take my own pocket digital camera out from my pants pocket.

The irony of the two scenes did not go over my head.

I still think I would have used the Leica around my neck, if I had one there. As it was, I understand the point: Use the tool at hand.

Cameron Knowlton posted a photo:

I helped out this friendly food activist in Victoria yesterday, and he offered to pose for a photo.

I had my ultrawide angle lens that day, though, which is *not* friendly for portraits. I had to think on my feet to come up with a composition that would include the man as the main element of the photo, without blowing the distortion completely out of whack. I chose to go wide and use the church as my secondary element, while the sign and accompanying newspaper clipping about the man provide the third element of interest.

I should have popped my onboard flash for some fill light, as this photo SOOC ended up too dark on the man's face and sign. I used a series of graduated filter layers in Lightroom to build up the shadows and reduce the resulting highlights, until I ended up with this pseudo-flash look. Fortunately, I was able to recover the shadows on the front of the cathedral at the same time.

I pushed the aperture all the way down to this lens' widest (f/4), which nailed the DOF that I was looking for; my DOF range ends at the sign, just before the tree. Even his leg is isolated from his bag.

I spotted this (anti-graffiti) artwork on an electrical box in Nanaimo, BC. Local governments started using this coating to prevent graffiti about 10 years ago, while providing artistic insights into local history, or walking maps of the local area. Really quite brilliant.
This piece reflects Nanaimo's history as a primary source of coal during the area's development in the mid to late 1800s through the mid 1900s.
