mine in Alsace, France. Model: Artruk.

PS: The object on the right that looks like a tractor wheel is
in fact a big cylinder connected to a huge engine that used to
extract tons of potash minerals (salts that contain potassium)
when the mine was still active...

Kaliumcarbonat oder Pottasche (K2CO3) ist das Kaliumsalz der Kohlensäure. Es bildet ein weißes, hygroskopisches Pulver mit einer Schmelztemperatur von 891 °C.
Der Name Pottasche stammt von der alten Methode zur Anreicherung von Kaliumcarbonat aus Holzasche durch Auswaschen mit Wasser und anschließendes Eindampfen in Pötten (Töpfen). Der traditionelle Name stand auch Pate für die englischen Namen potash und potassium, wobei potash viele mineralische Kaliumsalze einschließt (z. B. Kaliumchlorid) und besser mit Kalisalz übersetzt werden sollte.
Kaliumcarbonat wird auch als Backtreibmittel verwendet. In einen Teig werden mit diesem chemischen Stoff Gase einlagert (meist Kohlenstoffdioxid) welche auflockernd wirken. Durch das Backen werden aus den Gasblasen im Teig die Poren in der Krume des Gebäcks. Die Lockerung macht das Gebäck erst essbar; ungelockertes Gebäck ließe sich kaum kauen, sondern höchstens lutschen (Beispiel: Lebkuchen in früheren Zeiten, bevor man begonnen hat, ihn mit Hirschhornsalz zu lockern).
