Painted Trillium

John Cothron posted a photo:

The Painted Trillium can be found growing in highly acidic soils, generaly in the shade of trees (pines, etc.) that love acidic soils as well. They can be found in the eastern part of the United States primarily, more prominantly in the north. Their outstanding characteristic is the pink/red inverted V at the base of each petal.

I just returned home from my weekend mountain trip. Graveyard Fields worked out well for the Painted Trillium to be blooming in full (there are many here). The weather was rainy but not so much so that there weren't good photographic opportunities at the places we visited. As always, my good friend John (x376) was with me and we had another memorable time. Hope everyone had a great weekend.
Please view on BLACK.
Looking Glass Rock from the Blue Ridge Parkway - North Carolina

On Saturday, I met Alan Cressler and Steve Bowling, both from Atlanta, Georgia, and we headed up to the Blue Ridge Parkway via Hwy. 215 to check out the wildflowers. The day was mostly cloudy -- sometimes a sprinkle or two of rain -- which made for excellent photography.

What we found was just amazing. The variety and amount of wildflowers was more than we could have imagined.

I'm temporarily posting only a single image of each species that we found, but if you want to see more and hear about our fantastic trip, check out Jim's Blog.

Pinkshell azalea is endemic to higher elevations of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is only known from a few counties in North Carolina. There is one unverified report from Rabun County, Georgia. The species blooms before the leaves appear. There are many that bloom along the Blue Ridge Parkway and approach roads in the vicinity of Black Balsam Knob. It is spectacular.
