"Beautiful Beasts" Exhibit at the Sam Noble Museum

The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History and I recently organized an exhibit called "Beautiful Beasts: The Unseen life of Oklahoma Spiders and Insects" which features several large-scale prints of my macrophotographs. The exhibit layout and printing turned out fantastic and I am immensely proud of everyone who helped put it together.

The museum is located in Norman, Oklahoma and the exhibit runs until September 8th, 2013. Also worth noting - my girlfriend, Kathleen Neeley did several illustrations (many of salticids!) for the didactic panels in this exhibit - more information on her illustration/artwork can be found here: www.kinkprints.com

The exhibit is definitely worth visiting if just for the giant inflatable Phidippus mystaceus!

I know it's been a long time since I've posted anything, but I've been busy taking photos the entire time. Now that the weather is getting a bit too cold for most insects, I've turned my efforts to editing. It's probably going to take a while because I've accumulated tens of thousands of photos. Obviously, only a fraction are keepers, but selecting and editing the best will still be time consuming.

This guy is one of my favorite species. They were pretty common a couple months ago, but I haven't seen any for a while. I've probably got better mystaceus pictures, so I'll post more after editing.

I finally found another adult male Phidppus mystaceus! It's been almost two years since the last one I found. The males of this species are possibly the most beautiful jumping spiders in the U.S. You really have to see the golden legs, bright green eyes, and metallic blue chelicerae in person before you can appreciate just how gorgeous these spiders are. In my experience, P. mystaceus also tends to be one of the easier jumpers to photograph. They're usually very calm and cooperative subjects, making it a double treat to find one.

I was so happy to see my favorite 'resident' jumping spider back today. I say "back" not because she ever left, but because I haven't been able to find her. She has won me over with her shiny green chelicerae and out of control brushiness. She was as jumpy as ever, once she finished digesting her lunch. (no crop)

Befriend a Jumping Spider and you'll be entertained for life! This fella visited us in our campground last fall and insisted on getting his picture taken. Sorry about the racing stripe background, but he wouldn't quit jumping in & out of the wooden slats on the picnic table. ID confirmed on BugGuide: bugguide.net/node/view/614080

So next time you go camping, look for him, and you'll have cheap entertainment the whole time.

A few days ago my little brother brought me this female P. mystaceus jumping spider. I brought her to my picnic table for a photoshoot where she spent about thirty minutes cleaning each leg. She was very cooperative and a great subject. This video shows her cleaning her feet.

Does anyone know if Flickr does something to videos when they are uploaded? Maybe it's just my computer, but this video seems really "jumpy" when I watch it on Flickr.
