Trying not to let the dreary day get her down, Penelope rests at the edge of Lake Butterfield, contemplating the reflection of the trees on its far side.

Lake Butterfield is one of three lakes in McNaughten Park in Pekin, Illinois. The steep hillside was dotted with geese and there were ducks swimming along the edge. A really pretty place, regardless of the weather.

The day before going away from Melbourne I walked in the pleasant Fitzroy Gardens. Exiting on Hotham Street I came upon this pretty sculpture. From a distance I thought: ''Looks like a Ganymede". But coming more closely I saw a Pelican caressed by a Boy.
This is 'Boy and Pelican' by the well-known Australian sculptor William Leslie Bowles (1885-1954). He fashioned it from Pyrmont red sandstone in 1936 (but the Boy's head had to be replaced in 1973 due to vandalism).
Apparently there's a story here that's older than is often thought. Many people in Australia would remember an immensely popular children's book by Colin Milton Thiele (1920-2006) - of German extraction from the Barossa Valley - Storm Boy of 1963; so well after Bowles's 1936 masterpiece. That novel was made into a widely-screened, prize-winning film with the same title in 1976, directed by French-Australian Henri Safran (1932-).
The story is of the coming of age and understanding of a lonesome boy on the rugged southern coasts of Australia. He rears three pelican chicks. One of them comes back to him and he names it Mr Percival. A great bond grows between the two; there are adventures in storms and a shipwreck. Tragically Mr Percival is shot.
Continuing on a circuitous walk that finally took me over a bridge with the coat of arms of the City of Melbourne I saw the city's motto: 'Vires acquirit eundo'. Those lines from Vergil are mostly translated as 'We gather strength as we go'. And I thought about the 'rumors' down through history of legendary Percival - of King Arthur fame - persevering on his quest of the Grail. I wonder whether the origins of Mr Percival, Thiele's Pelican, are connected to a quest: the Boy gathering strength to be a Man, the Knight to be Enlightened.
Whatever the case, it would be interesting to know what inspired Bowles in 1936 to fashion his Sandstone Work.

I hate the Ultegra triple front derailleur, it only works with the stock chainrings and probably also only with STI. So I installed this shiny old DEORE changer instead, which will work much better with these smaller rings.

Shimano Ultegra FC-6503, 172.5mm, circa 2001(?). I used these cranks on my former Vent Noir, I figured it was high time to put them back into circulation again. The stock 30/40/52 chainrings have been replaced with more sensible 26/38/48 rings.
