Glacier Bay è un bellissimo fiordo lungo 108 chilometri e molto ramificato. Appena 200 anni fà, tutto l'attuale fiordo era sommerso dal ghiaccio e Glacier Bay stessa non era altro che un immenso ghiacciaio spesso 1300 metri, largo fino a 40 chilometri ed esteso per più di 170 chilometri, fino alla catena montuosa si St. Elias. E' stata esattamente questa la situazione che il Cap. George Vancouver ha trovato esplorando l'area di Glacier Bay nel 1794, ma durante la successiva esplorazione condotta nel 1879 dal naturalista John Muir, fù scoperto che il ghiaccio si era retratto di ben 80 chilometri verso l'interno della baia. Fino al 1916 questo immenso ghiacciaio, attualmente chiamato Grand Pacific Glacier, si è retratto ulteriormente di altri 28 chilometri ed il suo fronte si trova alla fine del fiordo. Sembra che una retrazione così veloce non abbia alcun precedente nella storia del pianeta. Le neonate terre, intervallate da lunghi e sottili fiordi, sono attualmente ricoperte da una fitta foresta di abeti, da muschi e licheni, e presentano una fauna ricchissima.

NB: If this shot looks strangely familiar - I am posting it again as there are a few groups I want to post to and apparently according to Flickr I have maxed out the number of groups I can post to with my old shot - even though I have taken it out of some groups since being told (go figure!). So apologies if this looks as if I am re-promoting something - (which is a trick I don't particularly go for) - but this is the only fix I can think of.

Anyway, for those who haven't seen it and are vaguely interested, this is a famous tree in Loch Lomond, Scotland - famous amongst photographers anyway, who are attracted to the loch, the hills and the small but perfectly formed tree in the foreground. It's been years since I've been back there but a beautiful place and on the route of the West Highland way.

Ubudiah Mosque, Bukit Chandan, Kuala Kangsar, Perak, Malaysia

While convalescing from an illness in Port Dickson, Sultan Idris Murshidul-adzam Shah (1887-1916) made a vow to build a mosque at Bukit Chandan, Kuala Kangsar, when he fully recuperated.

After his return to Kuala Kangsar, he commanded Colonel Huxley of the Public Works Department, Kuala Lumpur, to design a mosque which he wanted to build. Architect Hubbert designed the mosque by adopting Moorish architecture in his design. Mr. Caulfield, the State Engineer then, was responsible for the construction. The unique Moorish design by Mr. Hubbert has made Ubudiah Mosque one of the building which attract tourists for its interesting architectural features.

On September 1913, Sultan Idris Murshidul'adzam Shah laid the foundation stone for the mosque but its completion was delayed due to damage to imported marbles from Italy brought about by elephants owned by the Sultan and Raja Chulan.

According to the story.....One day during a ceremony and a feast to celebrate the circumcision of Raja Khalid, a son of Sultan Abdul Jalil, suddenly His Highness' elephant named Kulub Chandan and its mahout, by the name of Kulub Said fought another elephant named Kulub Gangga with its mahout by the name of Uda Debok. The latter belonged to Raja Chulan.

In the ensuing battle the elephants came to the palace where the marbles and materials for the Mosque were kept and totally destroyed them. The battle lasted for several hours until Raja Chulan called his elephant by name and commanded it to stop fighting. The two elephants surprisingly obeyed his command and stopped fighting. Previous attempts made by other people to stop them from fighting were in vain.

As the marbles and materials for the Mosque were destroyed, fresh order was placed with Italy again. By this time the World War I broke out and the materials arrived very late as it had to travel via Cape of Good Hope.

However, in 1917, the construction of the Mosque was completed, and it was officially opened by Sultan Abdul Jalil Karamatullah Shah (1916-1918) who succeeded Sultan Idris I, who passed away in 1916.

At one time Ubudiah Mosque was the State Mosque until the completion of Sultan Idris Shah II Mosque in Ipoh. Ubudiah Mosque is now administered by the Ubudiah Mosque Administration Committee headed by a person appointed by the Sultan who holds the title of Orang Kaya-kaya Setia Bijaya di-Raja.
