Cooper's Woodland Diner

The bright red eye of a Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii) catches late day sun as it peers through the tangle of branches from the thicket. On an evening walk at Sara Park along the Wisconsin River in Tomahawk, I apparently interrupted Cooper's dinner (prey in talons). In the diminishing light and shadows, this hawk was looking for a bit of privacy to finish off its meal (I couldn't tell what it was, perhaps some type of waterfowl from the river). It did a good job at hiding from me in the thick tangle of woods by the trail. Cooper's Hawks are efficient aerialists and eat mainly medium-sized birds including European Starlings; Mourning Doves, and Rock Pigeons as common targets. They will also take American Robins, jays; Northern Flicker, Quail, Pheasant, Grouse, and Chickens. They will chase birds right through thick tree cover and often poach backyard bird feeders. I discovered this abandoned farm recently, but the house and barn were so overgrown I couldn't get any decent exterior shots. The inside of the house was very interesting, but I had to watch my step since about half of the floorboards were rotted away. This sink was off by itself in a small room off the kitchen.

I discovered this abandoned farm recently, but the house and barn were so overgrown I couldn't get any decent exterior shots. The inside of the house was very interesting, but I had to watch my step since about half of the floorboards were rotted away. I found this in the kitchen.

Enjoying a spot in the warm midmorning sunshine, a North Amercian Porcupine savors its gleaning of acorns scavenged from under the leaf litter of early spring. This Porcupine was unaware of my observation and took its time finding and eating these winter left-overs. Taken along County Hwy 107 just south of Tomahawk, Wisconsin.

A North American Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) savors an acorn scavenged among the leaf litter of early spring. Watching it slowly consume one acorn after another while soaking up the sunshine served as a reminder to me to give thanks to God for even simple things, like daily food and the warmth of sunshine in spring. Taken in Lincoln County along Highway 107 just south of Tomahawk.

A late afternoon cloud bank rolled in just before sunset making for dramatic light including lavender clouds on the still partially frozen Lake Mohawksin in Tomahawk, Wisconsin. This is only a small part of this large body of water created by the convergence of three rivers: the Somo, Tomahawk, and Wisconsin Rivers, hence the name Mohawksin (a combo of all three river names). I love when the winds drop giving that glassy surface on the water and yielding such lovely colors and reflections of the sky. This image is named for some dear friends who live on the shoreline opposite the island, near the center of the image.

An usually long winter finally loses its grip on Lake Mohawksin in Tomahawk, Wisconsin. Large sheets of ice give way and float downstream breaking up as they crash into bridges and rocks along the way. A late day cloud bank makes for dramatic light and reflections on the calm water as the sun drops behind the far treeline. Taken in Lincoln County.
