A very early O'Dea photo, allegedly from November 1936. I'm not convinced about that month, unless it was unseasonably warm for the time of year. That looks like summer clobber on the local children who had gathered to watch the rebuilding of a bridge at Fassaugh Lane in Cabra, Dublin.

Apologies if I've been neglecting Mr O'Dea's photos recently, and thank you to PaganTree for requesting an O'Dea photo. As I'm always saying, we love to get requests so please just ask...

Date: November 1936?? Can anyone confirm when this Dublin bridge was rebuilt?

Shome mishtake shurely?

This was described in our catalogue as Up mail & 6.15 Sligo crossing up overload in refuge siding, Maynooth, Co. Kildare. Wasn't at all convinced that Maynooth really had a big siding area like this? Thanks to some of our usual suspects below for locating this one a good few counties away from Kildare in Cork!

Very exciting this morning, Flickroonies - we're venturing onto English soil!

This is an early O'Dea photograph from 1936, allegedly taken in Swedford, England. On a very cursory search, Swedford certainly wasn't leaping off the Google page, but we knew that Mr O'Dea took photos around Guildford...

eyelightfilms was first out of the traps on this one, locating Henekeys at no. 58, and Carling, Gill & Carling at 59 & 60 High Street in Guildford, Surrey.

Guinness Barge

This is the very neat and tidy "Castleknock" - a Guinness Barge - moored on the River Liffey in Dublin (53 years ago today). Niall McAuley provided a great link to the OSI Historic Maps showing this landing stage.

Meanwhile guliolopez unearthed a video of the "Castleknock" in action.

This is engine 207 (aka Boyne) at Conniberry, Co. Laois. According to our catalogue, this picture was taken while 207 was "getting coal supplies". However, the consensus from comments below is that it is water that's being taken on, so I'll change the description in our catalogue...

Thanks to a link provided by blackpoolbeach, we now know this engine was blue!

... taken on the Lower Road, Crosshaven, Co. Cork by James O'Dea, and we can just see his shadow down the bottom topped off by his distinctive hat. Was wondering if J. Kidney is still in the butcher business, and Niall McAuley provided the answer with this Street View link. Thanks also to blackpoolbeach for this bird's eye OSI view.

And great Crosshaven continuity in evidence from guliolopez with this PDF of Guys Cork Almanac 1945 (just scroll down a few pages to find Crosshaven listings). As guliolopez says:
"Carefully skirts any kidney jokes, and into the meat of it with a couple of notes:

# The 1945 directory puts Kidney's butchers at the same spot. (Guy's Almanac typically flags victuallers with a "v") So the Kidney family have been subject to awful puns in Crosshaven for ~60 years.

# The same 1945 directory shows "J. Desmond" also in Pier House. But no indication as to what the business was. May query the local knowledge pool on that one.

# Fitzgibbon's shop - responsible for the gable-end adornments - is also still there. Interesting that the Street View photo shows a HB sign in almost exactly the same spot as the Lucan Ices "mural". (Hinting at a ~60 year tradition advertising their cold treats in exactly the same spot)."

So many of our train shots show gleaming metal and shining livery, that we thought you might like this stripped back view inside the belly of the beast, with a shot of a train engine in the repair shop at (we thought) Arigna, Co. Roscommon.

However, while it may have been in the "repair shop" as the photographer James P. O'Dea called it, most commenters are in agreement that this engine was being dismantled or cannibalised for parts, scrap, etc. There are also suggestions that this photo was not taken at Arigna at all, but at nearby Ballinamore. As Flying Snail says:
"I don't think there was a loco repair shop at Arigna. The only workshops on the C&L [Cavan & Leitrim Line] were at Ballinamore, which was frequented heavily by photographers like O'Dea. This is where I suspect the photos is taken if it is a C&L machine we are looking at. The workshop buildings are now incorporated into a school, which the old station at Ballinamore was converted to after closure."

This fine trio are Mr J. Malone and his son, accompanied by their terrier who was in full voice by the looks of things, all pictured at Ashtown Train Station, Dublin. The photographer James O'Dea had obviously known Mr Malone for some time, as we have O'Dea photos of Mr Malone from 1938.

blackpoolbeach discovered that the little house at extreme left of this photo is still there...
