Borneo rainforest

Peter Denton posted a photo:

One of the joys of being in Borneo – the third-largest island in the world – is savouring its fantastic rainforests. Here in Sarawak, in the north-west of the island, wherever you are you’re only minutes away from the greenest, lushest landscape you can possibly imagine. This is the view from Mount Singai, just 30km south of the city of Kuching.

Borneo provides a vital habitat to 10 endemic species of primate (including the iconic orang utan), more than 350 bird species, 150 different reptiles and amphibians, and no fewer than 10,000 plant varieties. From 2007 to 2010 a total of 123 new species were recorded here.

Yet over the past few decades, much of Borneo’s lowland forest has been cleared for timber and to create plantations for palm oil and paper – which, of course, we all use. WWF, the environment charity, estimates that between 1980 and 2000, more timber was harvested from Borneo than was exported from the Amazon and Congo basins combined. International demand for wood and palm oil mean the forest is being cleared at a deeply alarming rate… and we’re allowing it to happen.

However, the island’s three governments – Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia – have agreed to protect, manage and restore 220,000 sq km of forests. That’s an area almost the size of the UK. Brokered by WWF, it’s a historic agreement that will go at least some of the way to protect this global treasure of plants, animals, water supplies and other natural resources – which we lose at our peril.

This seismic line, measuring 3 miles long and up to 8 feet wide, is one of many cut by U.S. Capital Energy. It was cleared illegally in Conejo land without the community's consent. As a result USCE has been forced to halt all oil explorations.
