Wandering Whistling-duck (Dendrocygna arcuata) has an extremely large range, and hence does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the range size criterion (Extent of Occurrence 30% decline over ten years or three generations). The population size is very large, and hence does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population size criterion (10% in ten years or three generations, or with a specified population structure). For these reasons the species is evaluated as Least Concern.

A once 'wandering' and rare duck which has now taken residence in Sabah and mainly found in large gregarious groups in deep lagoons, wetland areas, flooded grasslands, waterlogged paddy fields and in marshes, where they feed on grasses, water lillies and other water plants, also on insects and other aquatic animals. Sexual dimorphism is not that evident between male and female thus identification can be somewhat difficult.

This photo was taken on the Corroboree Creek billabong in the Northern Territory. The birds scientific name is Dendrocygna arcuata. A common name is Diving Whistling Duck. They similar in some respects to the Plumed Whistling Duck and can often be found in large mixed flocks with that bird. When seen together they can be quite easily distinguished from each other as the Whistling duck has black crown and nape which is lacking in the Plumed Whistling Duck, their lumes are shorter and not swept up as with the Plumed Whistling Duck and they have dark eyes while the Plumed Whistling Duck has an orange eye ring. Legs are also different colours. Wandering Whistling Ducks are foundon the coastal regions of WA from around Shark Bay north to the Kimberleys, across the top of the Northern Territory to Arnhem Land and in Queensland from Cape York in a band from the coast to mid-inland down to the Queensland/NSW border.

Some pix taken at the Wetland Birds Pools a little after the morning feed has been dished out.

The one wearing the eye mask in the middle is a pacific black duck, wild, not part of the zoo's stock. When the keepers dish out the food, the pacific black ducks turn up from all over the place and outnumber the exhibits.
