This historic building was constructed by the CCBA in 1909.<br /> <br /> I was quickly losing light, and the school was in near complete shadow compared to the sky, so I shot off a series of 9 manually set bracketed shots to catch one that I could later develop using Lightroom's shadow and highlight recovery. The exposure range was too high to get away with that, so I opted for HDR recovery in Photomatix.<br /> <br /> Originally, I chose to fuse the best 2 shots for shadows and sky in order to limit ghosting from using too many exposures. It worked well enough using Photomatix' natural fusion method, but I found the resulting image too flat. For fun, I thought I'd see how it worked using all 9 exposures, and was pleasantly surprised with this result.<br /> <br /> These are the first 9 exposures taken on my brand new Nikkor AF-S 16-35mm f/4 G ED VR (FX) lens. This is one of Nikon's Dream Team of lenses, the sharpest in its class. I found Architectural photos shot at 16mm almost impossible to correct cleanly. Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA) and Chinese Public School in Victoria's Chinatown, the oldest Chinatown in Canada. This historic building was constructed by the CCBA in 1909.<br /> <br /> I was quickly losing light, and the school was in near complete shadow compared to the sky, so I shot off a series of 9 manually set bracketed shots to catch one that I could later develop using Lightroom's shadow and highlight recovery. The exposure range was too high to get away with that, so I opted for HDR recovery in Photomatix.<br /> <br /> Originally, I chose to fuse the best 2 shots for shadows and sky in order to limit ghosting from using too many exposures. It worked well enough using Photomatix' natural fusion method, but I found the resulting image too flat. For fun, I thought I'd see how it worked using all 9 exposures, and was pleasantly surprised with this result.<br /> <br /> These are the first 9 exposures taken on my brand new Nikkor AF-S 16-35mm f/4 G ED VR (FX) lens. This is one of Nikon's Dream Team of lenses, the sharpest in its class. This lens will take some getting used to, but I'm already excited with the results.<br /> <br /> Probably its biggest issue is the distortion at its wider end. I found Architectural photos shot at 16mm almost impossible to correct cleanly. This HDR was shot at 18mm, which could be acceptably corrected with some work using Photoshop CS6's Perspective Crop tool. However, doing so ended up cropping the image down to about 20mm anyway, so next time I'll zoom in a little further, and grab a panorama set if I want to go wider.<br /> <br /> I'm looking forward to some Landscape shots which will be far more forgiving of ultrawide angles than Architectural photography.<br /> <br /> Nikon D600 and Nikkor 16-35mm f/4 VR lens at 18mm, manual exposure. 9 individual photos using ISO 400 and ISO 600, f/11 and f/13 exposed between 0.8 and 6 seconds.
