This is the only Florida dragonfly with white stigmas. A mature male has an all black face
and body, and a large black spot in the outer half of each wing. A juvenile has white spots on the
sides of the face, a brown thorax, and a brown abdomen with an irregular black dorsal stripe on
segments 4 to 9, but lacks wing spots. A female darkens more slowly than a male, and eventually
develops a black body and wing spots, but retains the pale facial spots. The abdomen of both sexes is slender, as long as a wing, and swollen at segments 2 and 3.

This species seems to prefer brackish or fertilized quiet waters, including ponds, lakes, and ditches. It flies all year in Florida, but is scarce in December and January.

This dragonfly perches on the tips of tall weeds, on twigs up into the tree tops, and on telephone wires. They occasionally take prey as large as small dragonflies, and often feed in
swarms early or late in the day. Pairs mate in flight for 5-15 seconds, then the female dips eggs into open water or masses of filamentous algae. The male may hover over the female to guard her from other males.

Here come a few Dragonfly we enjoyed finding & fotographing while in Savannah, Georgia.

Found in the South & Southeast Coast, we don't have this one round here in Missouri.

This is a gal to go with the preceeding guy.
