Oil on canvas; 137.2 x 100.3 cm.

Mariano José María Bernardo Fortuny y Marsal was a Spanish painter. His brief career encompassed both the Romantic fascination with orientalist themes, and a prescient loosening of brush-stroke and color. He was born in the autonomous community of Catalonia. . At the age of 14 years he moved to Barcelona. A sculptor, Domingo Taleru, secured him a pension to allow him to attend the Academy of Barcelona. There he studied for four years under Claudio Lorenzale, and in 1857 he gained a scholarship that entitled him to two years of studies in Rome. There he studied drawing and grand manner styles. In 1859, he was called by the Spanish government to depict the campaigns of the S panish-Moroccan War. The expedition lasted for only about six months, and he returned to Spain in the summer of 1860.

Since the days of Velazquez, there had been a tradition in Spain of memorializing battles and victories in paint; and on the basis of his experiences, Fortuny was commissioned by the city of Barcelona to paint a large canvas diorama of the capture of the camps of Muley-el-Abbas and Muley-el-Hamed by the Spanish army. The greater influence of this travel on Fortuny was his subsequent fascination with the exotic themes of the world of Morocco. He visited Paris in 1868 and 1870 followed by a two year stay in Granada. He returned to Rome, where he died somewhat suddenly from an attack of tertian ague, or malaria, contracted while painting in the open air at Naples and Portici in the summer of 1874.

62-1398-7 of Galati depot is seen working the late InterRegio train to Galati (IR 1865-2).

The morning IR train to Galati was cancelled a week after this photo was made, and now this train is also worked by a Siemens Desiro DMU. It is said that from the 1st of June the railway timetable will be changed and many other trains will be cancelled too...

The church is Baroque in the Netherlands style. The facade of the three orders is very elegant. Lines of conventional structure interspersed with decorations and Baroque additions give the whole a harmonious balance without overload. Unfortunately the lack of space - access to the church overlooks the street - does not allow the necessary perspective to artistic appreciation of the entire facade

This cathedral wowed me right away with its amazing fusion of ancient & modern architect! Hope this is something different for you too on this lovely Sunday :)
- Added 1 layer mask effect of 'saturation' (cyans & blues) to tone down the sky
- Added 1 layer mask effect of 'saturation' (greens) to slightly enhance the wall
- Added 1 layer mask effect of 'saturation' (reds & yellows) to tone down the cathedral
- Used slight 'unsharp mask' (as always) on the background layer
- Used 'free transform' (warp) to correct & straighten most fisheye distortion (this one is a pain!)

This is of coz not the best angle to take an interior shot of a cathedral :) However I really want to show everyone how amazing & unique this cathedral truly is. I have been to many cathedrals in my life & so far I have never seen one that has been done up like this. This cathedral wowed me right away with its amazing fusion of ancient & modern architect! Hope this is something different for you too on this lovely Sunday :)

I've photographed this boundary stone before but had to introduce the new 10-22mm lens to it on its first outing up Pumlumon. Considering its location it's amazing just how well it's weathered over the years; in fact there are quite a few of these scattered along the ridge joining Pumlumon Fawr, Pen Pumlumon Arwystli and the source of the Severn.
