In the wildlife refuge. There are a bunch of pelicans, sandpipers, herons, and egrets in the photo as well, of course.

The J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge has both white and brown pelicans, both splashing in noisy formations all over the lakes.

We were a little worried because it was 6:30 and the sign said the refuge closed at 7. But she assured us that once we were in, we could stay till dark. Ann Alessi of Tarpon Bay Explorers, the refuge concessionaire. Thanks, Ann!

He takes groups out at low tide at least twice a day, with him doing all the paddling, for a couple of hours at a time. He's also talking the entire time. Mark "Bird" Westall, who is here demonstrating the bobbing walk of the solitary sandpiper.
