Eiffel Tower at Night

Reached #156 in Explore on October 7, 2010 (a first for me!)

I promise this is the last of these that I post for awhile. Was going through the many night shots I took and this one stood out from the others. This was taken from the lower level of the Trocadero at the head of the reflecting pool. I liked the golden reflection on the wall in the foreground.

If you look through the bottom of the Eiffel Tower you see a building with a blue dome. That building is the École Militaire, sort of the French version of West Point. This is where Napoleon received some of his military training.
Harrisburg Skyline

This is similar to a photo I uploaded earlier this summer. I'm leaving for Paris next week and wanted to practice some nighttime shooting to get ready. The night didn't go as smoothly as I would have liked since the mosquitoes were out in full force.

The horizontal light streaks are a passing pontoon boat on its way back to the marina. The bridge on the left is the Walnut Street Bridge and that on the right is the Market Street Bridge. This is a single long exposure shot made with a nd filter. No DRI or HDR.

One quick tip on these shots, I set my WB to tungsten which gives the shot the more natural colors and let the lights stay white. If you use auto or daylight the lights take on an orangeish red color. This can be pleasing to some or even the effect you were looking for but if you want a natural look go with the tungsten. Also the tungsten setting will give you a bluer sky if you are shooting closer to dusk.
Tour Eiffel at Night

delfry posted a photo:

To totally appreciate this view you have to experience it in person. The Trocadero is located about a half mile from the Eiffel Tower and is about 100 feet above the base of the tower. There is a large plaza between two large buildings (a theater and the Maritime Museum). The plaza is busy all day with vendors selling cheap trinkets for exorbitant prices and street performers trying to earn a living and people just gazing at and photographing the tower.

At dusk the plaza really fills up until the point that there are probably a thousand people or more waiting for the lights to illuminate the tower. Then once per hour the tower puts on a show when thousands of little flash like bulbs twinkle repeatedly. When that begins you hear a collective sigh from the crowd.

This shot was taken from below the plaza at the head of the reflecting pool. The golden dome to the left is Les Invalides which among other things is the burial place for Napoleon. The Carousel was spinning during the shot and looks like a top in this photo, that's on the lower right. You can also see a star in the upper left portion of the sky.

Almost forgot, this one is SOOC, no post of any kind! I love when that happens.

This was taken a few minutes after the previous post. It's a slightly different perspective and the exposure isn't quite as long. I still had the ND filters stacked but cut the exposure back by 5 seconds. This darkened the scene a little more.

It was very humid that night which resulted in a little haze in the photo.

A friend and I went out last night to break in a tripod and get some nighttime shooting practice. I used a .9 and .6 ND filter on this to slow the shutter speed down to get the smooth water effect. Would have been nice if the sky was more interesting, maybe next time.
If you look closely at the first bridge section you can see the capitol dome. The people walking on the bridge all disappeared due to the long exposure.
