Travelintrevor posted a photo:

happy with the way this turned out. It did require more work post to clone out some rocks that just did not look right and some green water plants that made the foreground ugly.

There is one complaint about the 5D MK III that I have-it sucks in the shadows at low ISO. I am fairly certain that it is a step backwards from 7D in this regard. The banding that is present at ISO 100 is, to be honest, unacceptable at this level of camera. There is 0 (zero) flexibility when shooting a sunset or sunrise where you have extreme exposure differences. It makes manual blending very hard because you can't change opacity on the foreground layer much without the banding showing. Other than that, the 5D MK III is a joy and just gets out of the way when shooting. High ISO on the MK III is out of the world and so is everything else. If I was a landscape only kinda guy, I would get the D800.

This is a 2 exposure manual blend: 1/40 and 1/5 at f/11 and ISO 100.

but we took some time for a vacation and headed south and visited Washington D.C. before heading to our final destination in Virginia. Not too much to photograph along the way since D.C. was packed, the kids were with me and spring had not arrived. We will stop in D.C. again on the way home to see the cherry blossoms...if they decide to bloom this year :)

Have not stopped by anyone's stream in some time but will do so....eventually. No need to comment if all you are looking for is reciprocation from me.

I posted a photo of my daughter that had the same concept as this. We had done a similar photo for my son in May of last year and had been meaning to upload it as well. While the entire concept is a bit cheesy, it is still fun to do and your kids will love it. It also provides you with a record of that they wanted at that age. This is something that Tyler will surely want to hang up when he is older...and these photos made great presents to the family.

more rewarding than going back to an old photo and breathing new life into it with new editing. OK, there are plenty of things that are more rewarding (sex, ice cream, chocolate, taking new photos) but it is still fun to do...the original shot was good but when I first posted it, the processing was weak. I am planning on entering it in a contest for local photographers so I decided to give it a second look with a more critical eye and some new techniques.

portraits before going back to landscapes. (Skin tone looks funky in some browsers)

Last year, Alicia and I shot some photos and some gear was left behind. The intention was clam shell lighting but a grip arm was forgotten and I was trying to make do. I had given up and tried some other light placements like the one below and then never bothered looking at any of the other shots from that day...then while deleting old photos last week, this one jumped out at me. Better than the one in the comments...still not sure why it was skipped!

The lighting from the comment photo still appeals to me, but the editing needs to be revisited...the hair just bothers me too much since I tried to get rid of all the frizzie hair...for this one, I left some in because it just looks more natural.

Last year in July...

Travelintrevor posted a photo:

this young lady wanted to learn a bit about photography. We had already been out doing some landscapes when she expressed an interested in ambient light vs OCF. Since she is not bad looking, I told her that we would use her as the main model...she did shoot a few of me too but only photos of her will be posted since since she is better looking-slightly!

The ambient light only photo was posted last year and is in the comments...but I just now got around to posting the OCF shot.

Lighting info: 430EX II through softbox to camera left. I used E-TTL mode with a FEC of +1. The soft box was NOT pointed at her but at a right angle so that the light would be more feathered. Pointing it directly at her would have been too much light since the sun was behind her and the softbox would have acted as a reflector as well.
Last year in July...

this young lady wanted to learn a bit about photography.

Trigger was 580EX II on camera as master only.

again that all I have been able to do is take a quick peek at Flickr. Last weekend I felt inspired do so some work with the Expo-imaging grids and there were a few shots I liked. While not a 100% happy, I need to cut myself some slack because the stomach bug kept interfering with the photo session. While this is not even close to the excellent work of Greg Gorman, it is nonetheless inspired by his BW work. (Any banding you see is due to your monitor and not the photo)

be fun...so why is it so depressing at the same time? For the most part, the answers are right in front of me: I feel there are plenty of shortcomings in my work, have no real goal or direction, live in a mediocre place, weather sucks, have plenty of ideas but talk myself out of even trying them. The list goes on and on...but I keep at it, work on my technique and shortcomings, have set a few goals with a plan to carry them out. Right now, the warmth of the sun is missed and I wish I was anywhere but here in NNY.

Photo:
One early morning on the beach far away from here but no clouds to make the sunrise dramatic....so I took to the dock for a silhouette shot. A 12x18 is on my wall and reminds me of better days behind...and ahead. We will be moving soon!

things up a bit from all the landscape photos. We were walking around and came past this alley, I saw the light at the end, told him to stand there and act cool, set up the soft box to camera right, metered for the ambient light in alley, and set the E-TTL flash to FEC +1 and fired a test shot. Things looked good so a few more frames were captured before I had him stand up against the wall to his left so that we could end the day with the photo in the comments. The comment photo settings were 1/125 ƒ/5.6 ISO 100 and allowed no ambient light to register.

Travelintrevor posted a photo:

pano from my last outing with the 7D. The exposures were manually blended in CS5 after tweaking the settings in LR4. Overall, the goal was to make it look like a one shot exposure and it seems ok. More or less, this is practice for my 2014 and later trips when we start traveling again to more "exotic" places...
The masking seems to have gone fairly well. www.flickr.com/photos/9929191@N04/8369567863/sizes/o/in/p...

The overall sharpness is acceptable but less than f/11 would have yielded but f/18 gets that nice sun burst.

The sky 1/400 exposure but I had to increase exposure by 1 stop during post (so 1/200)
The foreground is 1/50 and was tweaked to about 1/30.

I have really lost my enthusiasm for FLICKR and have spent little time here. While I enjoyed the new way that FLICKR displays the groups (the photos are larger when skimming the groups), it seems like people are doing more post, dump into 50+ groups, and run than before. There were some stunning photos that I saw that had dismal views and even less comments...but decided today that I felt like some photo exploring on FLICKR land. Hope all is well with you and yours :)

times we have been to Allen Falls but this is the first time I walked away with something I liked. Nature is dynamic....so we go back to the same place when ever possible to see if anything has changed and this time we got lucky. The tree washed up on the shore and made this work for me.

Processed via LR 4 and CS5 and it has a few more layers than my usual edits...was going for a "wet" look.

4 shot pano stitched via CS5, modified in LR4 and then cropped into a 16:9 ratio.. I don't like the Blue very much in the sky but can't really go back and order a better color. I also wish that the branches did not cover the trees on the left but I was not about to break them off just to take the photo. The 7D + Tamron combo rather impressed me here and everything from the tree on the right to the trees in the background are decent sharp to sharp.

my last three uploads blew me away and I am flattered. The one photo I actually wanted to make explore was my last upload since I felt it was something special and the fact that it reached #9 supported my feeling..plus I am now no longer a "One hit wonder" with explore :)

Anyway, I wanted to change things up a little and throw in a quick portrait. Beckah was out shooting with me one day and to conclude our photography lesson, we got in some night photography to show her what it is all about. While the color shot is OK, the BW just appeals to me more....at least for now.

Shot with the incredible but not edible 5D Mark III...a remarkable piece of photography equipment.

Lighting info: Softbox to my left in ETTL mode at a FEC of -1.

this is my best and favorite landscape photo. Is it because it took a dozen or so trips and countless photos to get this scene just right? Is it because I chased the light and shadows for over a week? After walking up from the river to just below the bridge (that is where I was standing when I took this) I was left breathless, not from the hike up the hill, but at this sight. I grabbed my 5D MK III, dialed in f/9 and set my shutter speed fired away....about 30seconds after the last press of the shutter, the sunlight disappeared behind large grey clouds and the great light seen here was gone.

You must view large on black or even better this way www.flickr.com/photos/9929191@N04/8073844103/sizes/k/in/p...

reasons I have been gone from FLICKR. One is that I have been busy shooting and editing photos while working on my Masters degree. Anyway, this is a location near where I live and it took 3 trips to get what I wanted...I had to chase the good light!

Will stop by your stream as the day goes on and thanks for not throwing virtual tomatoes at me.
