Old book from 1783 with a strange burn mark/hole

Strange book I found in an antique bookshop - the front page was missing and there was a hole in the cover, apparently caused by a burn or something (probably the reason why it was affordable :)
The burn went through to page 17, then they must have noticed the disaster...

From the Table of Contents of an old book entitled "Satyrical Letters" which are most hilarious to read!

... MORE LIFE-LIKE AND LEGIBLE IN "ALL SIZES" :)

The particularly funny bit (... note) reads something like:

"The surly old spinster woos [courts] the professor" [in a letter]

"The professor's wife replies to the surly old spinster to inform her that her husband already has a wife" [in a reply letter]

Unfalteringly, she carries on courting and sending letters to all sorts of other men in diverse positions (to no avail so far, but I'm not quite through yet :)

"Spröde" is a tricky word, can be "coy" , "standoffish", "haughty" -.. maybe "surly" fits best.
