Bamboo Finnerty Gardens

Today we walked 3.8km (2.4sm [sm=statute miles not to be confused with nm=nautical miles). TMI, I know . . .

We did take some pics in Finnerty Gardens using my Canon A460. It seems to be the most reliable macro camera in my fleet so why fool around with the others. Talking about the others: I'm starting to use my Canon S5is again and some of its extensive features are coming back to me. It's a great camera without a doubt (nearly $600 bucks back in 2007).

Friday we walked 5600m up The Grind and over Mt. Tolmie to Henderson Park and back thru UVic's Alumni Trails and Finnerty Gardens to home.

Today's photo shows one of several signs posted along the Alumni Trail system on the University of Victoria lands. Most of this trail system lies within densely forested areas or is lined with heavy brush.

The sign reads in part that an alleged offense occurred February 27, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. when a female jogger was attacked from behind by a male jogger. This person was able to escape without harm. A similar incident was reported as happening in Henderson Park area at approximately 2:30 p.m.

Today we walked 5km up Broadmead to UVic's Finnerty Gardens then over to Henderson Park. From there it was through Rattenbury to Mt. Tolmie Park and down Glastonbury.

It was 2°C. when we started just after nine but warmed up by the time we got home at 10:30a.m.

There are many harbingers of spring and today's photo of the snowdrops is but one.

Today we walked 4km counterclockwise up Glastonbury, over the mountain and returned via Finnerty Gardens. Shorts&shirtsleeve weather.

We saw visual art intertwined into the fence beside the Visual Arts' building at UVic on our way by this morning. Created by a visual artist, perhaps? Hmm.

Today we walked 4km thru Finnerty and over Mt. Tolmie. This walk takes us an hour.

This year marks UVic’s 50th anniversary! Many events, activities and projects are running from September 2012 to June 2013. Anniversary Highlights are special events organised by the anniversary team in collaboration with partners. These highlights are also listed in the Events Calendar at UVic's website.

Today we walked 5600m (3½ miles) on our clockwise Mt. Tolmie route. A pleasant morning at 6°C. (43°F.) with no rain. The saying in Victoria is if it isn't raining all that means is it's going to rain. Of course -- we jest.

Today's image is of the wildest (weirdest?) looking tree bark these old eyes ever encountered. The most ubiquitous tree photographed on Vancouver Island because of its interesting bark is undoubtedly the Arbutus. The bark on this tree beats an Arbutus handsdown!

Today we walked 4km ccw up the grind and over the mountain in a howling gale. Temperture was 3°C. We were totally suited up for winter winds but one has to be careful atop mountains so one doesn't get blown off. It's a possibility.

The flowers bloom year'round in Victoria. The City of Gardens and Canada's Most Bloomin' City are two of the monikers our fair city has earned over the years to attest to its favourable climate. Today's picture is of a Camellia bush blooming in Finnerty Gardens. It's nice to live where the grass is green and the flowers bloom year'round.

Today we walked 7km but who's counting? Well, my GPS SportTracker app in my droid is for one. lol

We hit up the Glastonbury Grind before peaking the mountain; then it was the usual ccw route around Henderson and back thru UVic to the local shopping mall. This hike took us two-hours.

Today's photo was taken while we took our break at Henderson Recreational Centre. It appears to me this group is discussing issues pertaining to this facility. Maybe they will conclude that after over three decades of use the old place could use a make-over. We'll keep you posted but remember -- you heard it here first.

Today we walked 5km on our clockwise route over the mountain. We first walked by Richard's place where he was busy in the garden planting fall flowers. Yes folks, in Victoria British Columbia Canada we have year-round blooms! The good news -- or make that better news -- is Richard already has cleaned up the mess and decorations from his community, Halloween event. Presumably, by the time he finishes planting the winter garden it will be time to start decorating the entire property for Christmas. Ah, the life of the landholder!

From there it was through the park, Finnerty Gardens to Haro Road (which is not actually a road but a trail), around Henderson, over the mountain and back down Glastonbury. This walk takes us 90-minutes.

The temperature was a balmy 14°C. and we have a picture-to-prove-it of a young man sitting on his lawn chair with just a t-shirt on. The railing was purposely left in this image-crop as a recognizable landmark -- so cherished by photographers such as myself. I used to say: "If you want a good seat come early." Permit to paraphrase that by stating: "If you want a good seat bring your own."

Today we walked 5km cw over the mountain around the golf course and through the university then on to the shopping mall. Today's photo shows where the two paths meet in finnerty Gardens. The path on the right (west) leads to the covered archway within the gardens. This is the access path when walking westbound; eastbound access is via the first pathway to one's right after entering the gardens.

Today we walked 5900m through a university, around a golf course, over a mountain and down to the shopping mall then home again.

Another beautiful morning to be outdoors! It was sunny when we left and as we climbed the mountain some low skud rolled in. 'Skud' is pilot speak for dense, patchy visible moisture. 'Visible moisture' is moisture in the air which due to changes in dew point and outside air temperature changes has become visible. Most people refer to it as either fog or cloud depending upon their relevant observation point. Moisture in the air is always present but not always visible.

Thus, today we've posted sunny photos from Finnerty Gardens and the foggy landscapes from atop Mt. Tolmie. One could argue the visible moisture atop the mountain is not fog but rather 'cloud'. One can readily see why aviators have long since used the 'visible moisture' moniker. It's less confusing.

Today we walked 5km ccw up Glastonbury, over a mountain, around a golf course, through a university and back home. it rained overnight but not during our walk. This was a bit disappointing as we were suited up for the rain. Oh well, there'll be other rainy days.

This is another of the copious amount of new signage erected on the university grounds recently. Presumably the cost of these signs is being covered by the university's 50th Anniversary funds.

Walked 4km up and down mountain back through Finnerty Gardens.

Saanich has in place anti-idling bylaws but apparently they only apply to the 'cash-cow'. The cash-cow in this case being your average motorist. These buses -- three-of-five on the mountain the time I was there -- all left their engines running throughout the duration of their layover. No one seems to care. Does anyone really care?
