Cascade Pier, Norfolk Island - Norfolk Guardian Anchored Just Offshore - Crane, Lighter and Tow Launch
The Norfolk Island Lighterage Service operates both here at Cascade Pier and also at Kingston Pier, on the southern side of the island, depending on sea conditions and weather,
The Norfolk Guardian visits Norfolk Island roughly every 3 weeks and as there is no boat harbour on the island transfer of goods from ship to shore is done by use of lighter boats (ex whaling boats) which are then towed to the pier by powerful motor boats.
At times the transfer of goods from the cargo ship, the Norfolk Guardian, which is anchored just offshore, to the pier can indeed be a perilous process both in getting the goods via the lighters to the pier and also because unloading at the pier in heavy swells can be both unpredictable and depending on sea conditions, very hazardous.
Rough sea conditions can cause the lighter boat loads to become unbalanced and many a load has gone overboard, including large vehicles which may need to be transported by lashing 2 lighter boats together. Once the goods arrive at Cascade Pier a crane lifts them onto the pier for distribution around Norfolk Island.
The vessel in the image pictured is a motorised towing launch.
It comes as a surprise to some that Norfolk Island does not have a safe harbour. Unfortunately there are no suitable bays which could have been easily developed for this purpose. To develop a harbour suitable for vessels the size of the Norfolk Guardian would require a huge financial investment, money that the small community of just over 2000 people on Norfolk Island just cannot afford.
Slaughter Bay can be seen centre picture - The name Slaughter in this case apparently came from the Anglo-Saxon words "slough" meaning wet land and "slohtre" a muddy place or from the name of their Norman landowners – the d’Schlotre family.
I don't think anything horrific happened to generate that name despite its harsh Penal Colony origins. The HMS Sirius was wrecked on the reef just outside Slaughter Bay in 1790 though.
The area of Slaughter Bay was quarried under the water for limestone which was used in Buildings around Kingston and in particular St Barnabas Church.
Today it is an idyllic and safe snorkelling location.

The Cotswold villages of Lower and Upper Slaughter in Goucestershire have a slow moving stream, The River Eye, passing through them.
Phillip Island is an uninhabited island located 6 km (3.7 mi) south of Norfolk Island in the Southwest Pacific, and part of the Norfolk Island group. It was named in 1788 by Lieutenant Philip Gidley King for Arthur Phillip, the first Governor of New South Wales. It is part of the Australian territory of Norfolk Island. It is included in Norfolk Island National Park, as is neighbouring Nepean Island, and about 10 per cent of Norfolk Island proper. Phillip Island has an area of 190 hectares (470 acres), measuring 2.1 km (1.3 mi) from west to east and 1.95 km (1.21 mi) from north to south, with the highest point, Jacky Jacky, 280 m (920 ft) above sea level. It is roughly shaped like a hairdryer with the nozzle pointing east. The island is of volcanic origin, made of basaltic tuff and lava dating from the Miocene epoch. Phillip Island is included on the Register of the National Estate.
The vegetation of Phillip Island was devastated due to the introduction, during Norfolk's penal colony era, of pest animals such as pigs, goats and rabbits. This caused massive erosion, giving the island a reddish brown colour as viewed from Norfolk, due to the absence of topsoil. However, the pigs and goats were removed by the early 20th century, and rabbits were exterminated by 1988. Since then, natural regeneration of native species and weeds, and remediation work by park staff, has brought considerable improvement to Phillip Island's environment.
Despite the environmental degradation, the lack of feral cats and rats on the island has allowed some animals to persist there after having become extinct on Norfolk; however, there are extinct species who lived on both islands such as the Norfolk Kaka. Two terrestrial reptiles, a gecko (Christinus guentheri), and a skink (Cyclodina lichenigera), have been recorded. It is an important breeding site for 12 species of seabirds, including the Providence Petrel, Kermadec Petrel, White-necked Petrel, Wedge-tailed Shearwater, Australasian Gannet, Sooty Tern (known locally as the Whale Bird), Red-tailed Tropicbird and Grey Noddy. The Sooty Tern has traditionally been subject to seasonal egg harvesting. Phillip Island has been identified by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area (IBA), separate from the Norfolk Island IBA, because it supports small but increasing populations of Providence and White-necked Petrels, as well as over 1% of the world population of Grey Noddies.

Nepean Island is a small uninhabited island located at 29°04′S 167°57′ECoordinates: 29°04′S 167°57′E, about 1 km south off a golf course on Norfolk Island in the Southwest Pacific. It was named in 1788 by Lieutenant Philip Gidley King for Evan Nepean, Under Secretary of the Home Department of the United Kingdom. It is part of the Australian territory of Norfolk Island and is included in the Norfolk Island National Park, as is nearby Phillip Island, and about 10 per cent of Norfolk Island proper. The island is made of calcareous rock dating from the late Pleistocene and is a breeding site for several species of seabirds.
Slaughter Bay's name is not as ominous as it sounds as The name Slaughter in this case apparently came from the Anglo-Saxon words "slough" meaning wet land and "slohtre" a muddy place or from the name of their Norman landowners, the d’Schlotre family.

The Royal Engineers began construction of the pier in 1839,
Using convict chain gangs as labourers usually working in chains at low tide but sometimes with water up to their necks. The natural rocky outcrop that stretched from the shore to the reef was used as foundations. Just to the right of the pier in what is now known as Cresswell Bay, is where the first settlement of Europeans landed in 1788.
The town was founded on 6th March 1788 by Lieutenant Philip Gidley King and 22 settlers (including 9 male and 6 female convicts) who landed that day from HMT Supply. They had sailed from Port Jackson (Sydney) just a few weeks after the establishment of the British colony of New South Wales and were sent to Norfolk Island by Governor Phillip from the First Fleet who had landed in Sydney on January 26 1788. The settlement was initially known as Sidney or Sydney Bay, and by 1796 was being called the Town of Sydney, It later became known as Kings Town then Kingston.

The pier is one of two entry points to the island (the other is at Cascade Pier) for goods that arrive by ship every three weeks or so. The goods, including large items such as trucks are often perilously transported from the ship to the pier using small boats called lighters. The goods are then lifted by crane onto the jetty. Sometimes the goods go overboard when the seas are rough or if the lighters are not well loaded.
These barnacles have hitchiked a ride on this pumice stone which has washed up on this sheltered beach at Kingston on Norfolk Island. The bay/beach is known as Slaughter Bay.
