the next day we went to a location near the Mines Road and the toll road, about 19 miles north of Laredo and it was another fairly cool and breezy day - unusual for this time of the year and it had rained in that area, the day before, as well!

On a recent field trip to the Walker Ranch (Bird Hills area - 16-17 miles south of Alpine, Texas in Brewster County), Teri, the field trip leader, collected this broken, but large and beautiful fortification agate (photograph by my friend, Johnny French)

a Rojo maze

There is no way to know how large the original formation of this agate was - broken on three sides - probably came from a seam in basalt at a site called "Rojo" - this is the one just east of Tinaja Espetacion, where the cathedral agate mine (now closed) is located.

exposed gravel

from where I parked the truck, you can see the Santa Rosa fishing and rv camp buildings and in the middle of the gravel road, where water ran over it the day before, exposing a lot of fresh agate (of course, mixed in with many leaverites!)

The heel I cut off this unusual specimen of Brazilian agate - after I have removed the very thin sharp edges and trying to retain as much of the tube structions and look of the stone.

This is the whole face of the specimen which has had only one thin slab and a heal cut off one side - it is full of very fine detailed, micro-plumes, in three layers of color.

an enlarged area of a small, but pretty flowergarden agate I cut tonight - shown wet for now. The agate is from the Falcon Lake area - will take a much better photograph as soon as I can get set back up for doing that.

Jim and I really enjoyed visiting with Thom, a very experienced agate collector who had recently purchased agates from some old and important collections. I spent most of my money at his booth, located in the RV park venue at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Arizona.

more interesting than it is beautiful - a grayish-brown plume agate with a few hints of blue - some of these are so dense, you cannot even be sure there is a plume in it, but some are very nice - you just have to cut a bunch of them to find one of those nice ones!

both rough, large sides of this specimen contain the druzy pockets and I was concerned about how solid the interior would be - turned out better than I expected.

taken to reveal a little more of the details within this unusual agate variety - several similar specimens have been found at that site over about a ten year period and during 5-6 field trips we were privileged to participate in with our guide Jesus "Chuy" Villa.

it turned out better than I expected, even with the small fractures and has some nice parallax effect. (was approximately 6 and 1/2 cm long before I cut it.)

shown wet and one of the finest examples of moss in tubes I have found to date - "Rojo" also produces some rather large specimens of this and other types of agate and I am not yet ready to photograph any of those.
