Meet Abraham (6990ft), Isaac (6825ft), and Jacob (6831ft), many of the landmarks in Zion national park have biblical names. Zion was originally inhabited by the Anasazi Indians before being taken over by the Mormons in the 19th century. I think a better name for these mountains would be Shadrack, Meshack, and Abednego because they pretty much live in a fiery furnace.

This was taken during the last day of our Western American Road Trip this summer(other day in the park). We almost headed straight back to LAX but I am glad we went back into the park for one last view. The sky was just so blue and the morning light is the best time to photograph these mountains.

Process:
Stitched 5 vertical frames in CS4 (ratio makes a nice 10x30 print)
Minor saturation adjustment to the Reds and Blues and Yellows
Slight levels adjustment
Unsharp Mask on mountains
Small Noise reduction of sky and shadows

Nevada Falls

If you think you can just drive to some overlook in Yosemite and get this view, you are mistaken. This is Nevada Falls. It is a 3 mile hike up, and when I say up I mean UP. Even though it was long and steep it was probably one of my favorite hikes of the road trip. Vernal Falls is about 1.5 miles into the hike, and if you are ambitions Half Dome is another 4-5 miles (I am sure that is UP as well) from Nevada Falls. This picture was taken along the John Muir trail, which we took back down.

This is actually one of my first uploads to flickr. I recently downloaded Topaz's Denoise free trail and thought I would clean this up. Taken before I knew what RAW was, Denoise did a very impressive job on this jpeg.

This was taken at Lighthouse Point Park, its a great park that allows dog's on the beach. It can make a fun day drinking a beverage of choice with your sandy, wet dog, listing to Buffett watching the boats come and go from the ocean.

Saturday mornings at a marina seem pretty relaxed. It is probably like this every morning but I was there on Saturday. Most of these these boats had someone sitting on the deck, drinking coffee and watching the sunrise. Seems like my kind of life, going from marina to marina with nothing (other than the gas bill) tying you down.

Taken at Big Sur Campground in California. Check out day 2 to see our tent engulfed in these trees. All the campfires created the smoke that helped produce these rays of light.

I did wake up at 3am to see the sunrise in the Grand Canyon. It was an amazing experience to watch the colors change along the canyon wall and this pano certainly does not do it justice.

I saw some amazing things on vacation this year. This was taken from Day 12. These are the Mitten's of Monument Valley, made famous by John Wayne and other western movies. To enter M.V. it will cost you $10 a person and from the visitor center this is the best view the valley has to offer. You can take the "self-guided" tour but be prepared to be absolutely beaten to death. You would think for that price they could at least have the road graded ever now and then. I know America has not been to friendly to the Native Indians and they really do survive on the tourist income. But that road about sent my wife into premature labor it was so bad. O well...... maybe one day someone would want to buy a print of this to help me feel better about being ripped off.

July 3rd 2009, Day 17 of The Great Western America Road Trip

On our last day we went through Zion one last time before making the long drive back to LA for our flight the next morning. I hope you enjoyed the pictures, nothing I can do can portray the raw beauty we witnessed. If you ever have any questions I would be happy to answer them. It is an amazing country we live in and I hope you get a chance to see some of the things I did.

In summary the trip was everything we wanted it to be. During our 2.5 week vacation we traveled 8 hours in plane, over 3200 miles in car, 50 miles hiked, through 4 states and 7 national parks. Some of the animals we witnessed were elk, deer, big horn sheep, bear, bear cubs, marmots, Bryce Canyon goats, and seals. He hardly saw any rain which is a blessing while tent camping. This was something we dreamed about for many years. Things that made it affordable were borrowing my brother's truck, cooking our own meals, and sleeping in a tent. Truly a great experience and I am very thankful to have the opportunity. Thank you for following my trip and happy traveling!
