In 2008 this is one of the first images I shot at night with my then brand-new Canon 40D. When I looked at the LCD I was delighted. When I got home, much less so due to the noise and the underexposure. I've been back up the mountain perhaps 80 times, and never have I seen the fog sensuously enrobe the landscape like it did on this night. Every shot was underexposed and noisy.<br /> <br /> Fortunately the tools to manage the noise are getting better all the time, and a shot like this with lots of smoothness can benefit from pretty forceful noise reduction using Adobe Camera Raw 7.4, and Topaz Labs DeNoise.<br /> <br /> I've just about finished the material for a "<a href="http://events.starcircleacademy.com/events/34685952/" rel="nofollow">Down with the Noise</a>" Webinar.<br /> <br /> There is still some horizontal banding noise in this image and I may reprocess it again. All the light comes from the glow of 9 million households - much of that using the yellow/brown sodium vapor light. This image was taken in February when early darkness meant it was easily possible to shoot after sunset and before the park curfew. There is a lot of light spilled from the lighting on the dishes and here I have been a little less heavy handed in correcting the ground brightness. I also color corrected the radio telescopes, and toned down the somewhat over-blue stars in the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/steventheamusing/8705745538/in/photostream">prior post</a>.<br /> <br /> The Milky Way Rises over an array of radio telescopes - two of which are visible here. There is <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/steventheamusing/8704585669/in/photostream/">a timelapse to watch, too</a>. In fact, there are three. Here is a photo from a recent <a href="http://events.starcircleacademy.com/events/106446572/" rel="nofollow">Field Expedition</a> to a place where we had enough light pollution to make it look like sunrise or sunset, enough texture in the terrain to add interest, and some stars in the sky, too.<br /> <br /> Of course the stars needed quite a bit of coaxing as they are very shy about showing their faces in light polluted skies. I have three different "star bump" techniques most of which are described on my BLOG.
