Steven Christenson posted a photo:

This is a throwback. In 2008 this is one of the first images I shot at night with my then brand-new Canon 40D. When I looked at the LCD I was delighted. When I got home, much less so due to the noise and the underexposure. I've been back up the mountain perhaps 80 times, and never have I seen the fog sensuously enrobe the landscape like it did on this night. Every shot was underexposed and noisy.

Fortunately the tools to manage the noise are getting better all the time, and a shot like this with lots of smoothness can benefit from pretty forceful noise reduction using Adobe Camera Raw 7.4, and Topaz Labs DeNoise.

I've just about finished the material for a "Down with the Noise" Webinar.

There is still some horizontal banding noise in this image and I may reprocess it again. All the light comes from the glow of 9 million households - much of that using the yellow/brown sodium vapor light. This image was taken in February when early darkness meant it was easily possible to shoot after sunset and before the park curfew. That's the city of San Jose in the background.
Milky Way Ripped by Satellites

I went to film another segment of my "Milky Way Rising" timelapse series.

This was taken in Yosemite near Glacier Point from 12:30 AM until 4:40 AM when twilight overwhelmed the sky.

At time 00:08 until the end, you'll notice a TON of satellites - and a few planes.

The foreground rock is large and lit using a technique I'll be describing in an upcoming column on the BLOG.

This image is the same content, but has been cleaned up a bit more than the previous posting. There is a lot of light spilled from the lighting on the dishes and here I have been a little less heavy handed in correcting the ground brightness. I also color corrected the radio telescopes, and toned down the somewhat over-blue stars in the prior post.

The Milky Way Rises over an array of radio telescopes - two of which are visible here. There is a timelapse to watch, too. In fact, there are three. The best, IMHO is this one.

The Milky Way Rises over an array of radio telescopes - three of which are visible in this sequence.

The shots began at 1:06 AM and ended at 1:59 AM. The moon rose shortly thereafter. So you're seeing about an hour in 10 seconds real time.

I used Picasa for the titling.. it's far from perfect, but this was a quick splice of one of the timelapses.

My great thanks to Andy for both suggesting the trip and doing the lion's share of driving.

The Milky Way Rises over an array of radio telescopes - two of which are visible here. There is a timelapse to watch, too. In fact, there are three. The best, IMHO is this one.

Just about everyone who has been to Big Sur has a photo of the Bixby Bridge. Before the bridge was built and opened in 1932 the trek down Hwy 1 required more than a dozen miles of inland driving down the unpaved and often impassable Old Coast Road. Here you see the bridge in moonlight.

The Bixby Bridge is featured in many commercials because the setting is so awesome. I've featured the bridge before, see below.

I did alter this in a way I'll bet nobody will notice (besides healing out some telephone wires, that is). Jupiter was in the shot, but it had an awful purple chromatic aberration so I cloned it out using a bright star.

The radio tower peaking out at the right is perhaps a distraction, but I loved how the gnarly oak trees seemed to surround the core of our Milky Way. Fortunately the glow on the horizon is only in part due to light pollution, but mostly due to the sunrise that would come about an hour later.

Steven Christenson posted a photo:

Found myself itching for some night shooting. The forecast was clear (but windy), so I mapped out 3 locations along the Big Sur Coast that I wanted to visit.

This was my last stop on the way back home. Not that I wouldn't have continued shooting, but twilight came soon after - as did a thickening sea mist.

There was a small pool of still water near here that reflected the Milky Way. That's the first time I remember ever seeing the Milky Way clearly reflected in water before (photo of that is below).

This formation made me famous years ago. Ok, so famous is perhaps too strong a word, but I did get some notoriety.

By the way, the "crunchiness" in the stars goes away if you see the large image. The crunchiness is an artifact of downsizing by Flickr.

Yes, this is a single exposure which I cropped from a 15mm fisheye lens shot.

I never got around to uploading this photo from December, 2012. It was an expedition of events.starcircleacademy.com. The weather was fickle and when we awoke there was ice covering every puddle from rain that had come the day before. There was even ice on the sleeping bag.

Next I'll be posting a photo from twilight... same general location.

I assume you found the photographer.
This photo was taken in Fremont Peak State Park where despite encroaching light pollution it is still possible to see the Milky Way - but just barely.
Did you know that there is a link between lack of darkness and breast cancer? You might not be as enthralled as I am by the sight of the Milky Way in a dark environment but I'll bet you know someone who suffered from breast cancer. Sadly, I know three women who perished, and two more currently in the fight.

Save the wonder of the night skies, save a life. All we have to do is to ask for and use reasonable lighting controls.

Quoting from the Washington Post Article (link below)
"But the researchers found the breast cancer rate in localities with average night lighting to be 37 percent higher than in communities with the lowest amount of light; and they noted that the rate was higher by an additional 27 percent in areas with the highest amount of light."

It's always fun finding interesting foregrounds to marry with the sky. Here is a photo from a recent Field Expedition to a place where we had enough light pollution to make it look like sunrise or sunset, enough texture in the terrain to add interest, and some stars in the sky, too.

Of course the stars needed quite a bit of coaxing as they are very shy about showing their faces in light polluted skies. I have three different "star bump" techniques most of which are described on my BLOG. The technique I used here is described in my "Dust-Subtract" method in the NP150d Webinar.

About the only way to tame strong light pollution is to shorten your exposures. Here I've kept the exposures so short that the sky glow is not overwhelming the stars except down close to the source of the intense light pollution. This was taken during a Field Expedition of events.starcircleacademy.com.
