It Wouldn't Be the Same Without Her

Grandmother Bayon sits among the dancing apsara and faded carvings that cover the walls of the ancient ruins of the Bayon, Angkor Thom.

I remembered her gentle smile from my visit last year, and was so happy to see her welcoming visitors to the temple again this year. At 75 years old, who knows how long we will be blessed with her smile and her presence? For me, visiting Bayon with seeing her would not be the same.

Hopefully I will learn Khmer quick enough to have the opportunity to understand what she was trying to tell me!

Guess where I'm going?!

An old image from my first trip to Cambodia last September. I've been looking for a chance to get back ever since. Can't wait to see all the friends I made there once again.

As amazing and beautiful as Angkor Wat is, it pales in comparison to the beauty and resilience of the Cambodian people.

Fushimi Inari : 伏見稲荷大社

Fushimi Inari Taisha (伏見稲荷大社) is a shinto jinja (shrine) dedicated to the spirit Inari, located in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto, Japan.

It is especially well known for the thousands of vermilion torii lining the paths on the hill on which the shrine is located. The torii gates are all donations from individuals, families or companies. The Inari spirit is considered to be the protector of grains, especially rice, and has thus historically been associated with wealth. Companies often make offerings to Inari shrines in the form of barrels of rice wine (sake) or torii gates.

Two of the 216 faces starring at you from the heights of Bayon.Cambodia.

A translation of King Jayavarman VII`s mystic Buddhist beliefs, Bayon is a spiritual experience. From each of the survivng towers the enlightened grin of the Boddhisattva Avalokitesvara, one of the most worshipped divinities in Mahayana Buddhism and the kingdom's principal divinity, compassion radiates out in the four cardinal directions. Carved in the likeness of the King himself (his portrait is known from other sculptures found elsewhere in Cambodia and Thailand), these enigmatically smiling faces portray the King as god, symbolizing his omnipresence and omnipotence.
