You should not wear shade when playing smartphone poker. You opponents might see in the reflection of your glasses that you have a small straight (S2, S3 and S4)...

In case you wonder: the S3 is my wife's (hence white) while I got the S4 from my provider for my two year old S2. Yes I am kind of convinced of the galaxy series. And this new phone might actually become a life companion as advertised.

What it took:In order to get the reflection on my glasses I had to shoot in very dim light and any kind of flash ruined it so that I ended up with horrible exposure times and high ISO of 3200. The reflection is real but from a second shot with only 1/100 th to get sufficient sharpness. In post-processing Nik Efex got it all right afterwards...

Watch it large for the reflections.

Prozac09 had his operation today fixing that navel which he had since his birth (hernia). Now he is back home and all went well so I feel confident to post the picture we made just this morning as a "souvenir" for later. The puppet that joined him had the same problem by the way...

Bought the Nik Filter package recently and took the opportunity to alter a recent self portrait like hell. Can't even tell what I did. It was really more about getting to know what is possible. But for that I am very pleased with the nostalgic, tonemapped, structured, surreal outcome.
Money well spent.

Other than before this time the study really starts with part 1.
So today you turned fantastic four. You are now officially a kid and not a baby anymore. Most important of all it seems that your crazy little heart really grew as much as you and understood in the meantime what reasonable bpms look like. For that I can live with the fact that you ruined one of your teeth in the last year (stairs 1; Prozac09 0). You are still bigger and heavier (well after munching a pizza) than your brother at same age, but you are just as lovely. We love you both. Happy birthday.

The cake for Prozac09 fourth birthday tomorrow. I can not imagine actually eating it (Prozac09 will take it to the child care where lots of hungry kids probably won't have the same scruple...) It is just too great what my wife accomplished here. And it was fun determining when the fluid chocolate would have just the right viscosity to not break through the cracks of the kit kats but still fluid enough to actually flow.

Exactly now 16 years ago two people decided (it was kind of a rational decision) to try it as a couple.
6.5 years later they married.
8.5 years later they got a son
12 years later they got another son.

Looking back it was a really smart decision.

Strobist Info: Kinda sophisticated: We were leaning on a stool with a hole below our chins. Below the stool I placed a 420 EZ at 1/8th 45 degrees up (part of the light went through the hole on our chins, part went on the white wall behind us.). MAin light was the 580 EX II at 1/2 pointing up (with internal reflector pulled out).

Prozac09 loves to watch videos from earlier times. Different to photos the amount of videos that I have is rather limited. But this one he is watching here is one of his favorites. He just wants to watch it again and again. And he starts to synchronize his own laughing (which is real by the way) with the laughing he did 2.5 years ago (I do not even remember what we did originally to make him laugh like that).

I realized today that my Nexus 7 tablet is broken. Turned out my son dropped it. While I was really mad at him at first especially that he did not tell me, eventually I came to the conclusion that he indeed did not realize that it was damaged since it fell after being turned of (his little brother backed up his story). Later he came back to me with this letter of excuse that in a nutshell says (tried to translate the typos):
"Deer Chistian
I exuse
that I made your teblet kaput.
Quentin"
So anger was moved by deep heartwarming empathy and love. Now after some cuddling and having brought him to bed I sit here sad about my broken toy and think if that was a sign to buy a Nexus 10 instead (and lock it away from the children). Yeah, I think that is what fate wants to tell me...

So this is the actual shot that I had planned to begin with. But between us it proved more difficult than anticipated to pour Wodka and Red Bull into a glass while sitting behind the bear and pressing him against the bar. Well, long story short, in between I dropped the Red Bull, in the attempt to catch it poured some wodka over the bear and overall made a huge mess. That was when I was ready to go with the simpler shot. However eventually I did not want to give up and so after cleaning up, gave it another try. The glass ended up pretty full as you can see. Afterwards I had to discard it properly which resulted in the evening ending pretty great *hicks*.
Needless to say the post-processing was done on the next day...

Go really close.

A recent statistic has shown that 13.2 % of all consultants have such a work-life disbalance that they can not maintain a healthy social life, not even on social platforms (most of them have less than 100 Facebook friends!!!!!). So instead of meeting with friends, family, prostitutes etc. they end up in their hotel room late in the evening drinking beer with their teddy bear. A modern version of the old woman with the 1000 cats. Sad. Lucky me I am not a consultant, and consider my social life as healthy (even so I also have less than 100 Facebook friends...)
So my job here was just to point out an important misery. Now its up to you to do something about it (like hugging a consultant even if he just synergized your job away).

We have been breeding a pair of drag racers here. Prozac05 and 09 have not been on ski before the year 2013. But yesterday already it happened several times that I could not catch up with them as they decided that curves and slaloms are a waste of time and went for the direct line instead.
God what a glorious time that was back then when you just did not fear for your life...

As my last submission indeed is not the most colorful shot one can think of I thought I might retry something that I did a couple of years ago (back then without a flash). Capture falling M&Ms.
What it tookProved more difficult than anticipated. Even with 1/8000 th and the flash I still had the feeling that it does not have the desired crispness. But apparently the problem is more that the focus plane is quite narrow despite f/8. Anyhow after several trys I got the hang of pouring and shooting. Still in the end I had to composite several shots for a more homogenous placement of the M&Ms.

EDIT: Re-uploaded the shot. I was working and saving this picture accidentally in Pro-Photo RGB which is a wider colorspace than sRGB. However browsers only can show sRGB. And even worse those browsers who understand colorprofiles they show a much duller picture.
Now back to simple sRGB profiling.

I do admit that on first sight this picture does not contain much color. In real life the colored rainbow shirt of my son was much more dominant. But then I also did not want to crop these animals behind glass that stare at him. You will have to go large to get a flavor of the color in this pic.

What it took: A visit to the museum in the morning when apparently no one else was already up to go there... I only had my wideangle lens with me so I went for the bigger frame. No post-processing as such except for fine straightening and lens corrections.

As Prozac05 was sick this week-end I dared to visit the "Naturhistorisches Museum Basel" with the little one Prozac09 alone. I mainly went there for an exhibition of the "Wildlife photographers of the year". Absolutely breathtaking. However there were absolutly not photos allowed. But later on we went through the rest of the museum and I caught Prozac09 while having a sneak peek at human evolution.
