Community Weekend was always a great opportunity for students and staff to spend a fun weekend bonding out in the mountains.

I don't remember the name of this professor with the guitar, but I think he was a Physics prof.

Professor Dick Grayson was not a boy wonder, but he was a very adept piano player. One of the great annual events was his performance in which he'd invite the crowd to come up with requests to play a piece by one composer in the style of another.

Da Getaway was an annual Oxy party where everyone dressed up in 1920's clothes and had a big casino night. In the week leading up to it, each dorm would nominate someone for "The Boss" and put on a skit to garner votes.

This is from one of those skits.

The 1981-82 staff of the Occidental was the best one in my years there. Bill Knutson (back center, in plaid) was the Editor in Chief. I was the photo editor. Sammy Rubin (now an entertainment reporter) was the weak link as a clueless Sports editor.

For this picture, we figured we could get Chris Weitz's bug (getting handcuffed) into the office. Success! The security guy is John Jones, who was friendly with a lot of students.

Oxy through the 1980's used a shared phone system for incoming calls. They went to a switchboard where a "proctor" answered and buzzed people in their rooms, who then had to go to a hallway phone to talk. Usually there was a small staff of paid proctors, but everyone in the dorm had to take a shift occasionally. This is the paid crew for Stewie in 1983-84.

Smokewood was a bluegrass band made up of guys from the class of '80. They came back for several years and played for us, including this quad show in 1981.

This one night out on the Stewie patio I started trying some fun tricks with my new flash. This is a self-portrait of me walking to various points with the shutter open on a tripod, while I held a flashlight. Up close I fired the flash at myself. In retrospect, I wish I had written my name in chalk on the patio.

Annie Sheffield, art major and painter. This was another shot done for our calendar that was not used. Annie got into set design and then continued into it professionally.

This year included a skit where Dean of Students Brig Knauer, Dean of Faculty James England, and ???? did a send-up of "Flashdance" that was nothing more than a little stutter-step dance followed by turning around with this flash.
