ok, not really in the rainforest or even close to one. this was near terrell, texas. this non-rainforest tree gave up the ghost some time ago, apparently of natural causes. but i thought this ex-tree's advancing decrepitude had a certain something.

why not focus on the least important thing in the shot?

we'll probably still have a few more cold days ahead, but spring is trying to happen here in dallas. some of my bushes and trees are starting to bud and even flower in mid-february. so i got you a flower to celebrate.

millhouse and my friend ange's dog ewan busting some fly dance moves at the bark park in deep ellum. they're cool like that. ewan...who happens to be deaf...which can't help his dancing is a very sweet dog. he ended up flat on his butt 0.3 seconds after this. (photo withheld to protect the dignity of the innocent.)

i have to say, it's a definite challenge shooting a white dog and black dog dashing between intense sunlight and deep shadows while keeping your exposures even remotely under control.

ran into these weimaraners (who are sisters) on an icy day and they actually made my unruly-but-sweet german shorthaired pointer's behavior look good. not only is that snarl totally about as cujo-esque as they come, you can tell from the other's side they've bitten each other before. no damage was done that day, and of course, william wegman was nowhere in sight.

here the weimaraner sisters took over one of the dogpark tables. in an amusing way. i love the innocent look on the face of the one with the tennis ball in her mouth.

just a simple macro shot of a leaf. (a maple, i think.) i love looking at this sort of thing up close. i find all the details of the jagged edges, the cells and the veins running through the leaf pretty amazing. of course, i'm a little weird.

this was the first time millhouse was able to run completely free since i rescued him. and that sucker was impressive. he runs like a deer, literally bounding along with those thunder thighs of his. i took he and willie to a spot with big open fields and a lake surrounded by woods. basically, hunting dog heaven. they both had a ball, but the highlight was millhouse hopping leaping into the air trying to intercept an egret flying at least 20 feet over his head. (i told him he just missed it.)

i took a shot of raindrops on my windshield with my 50mm 1.4 one night and although i had a nice field of drops in focus, this bokeh-riffic area seemed so alive, it captured me. the way the water and light dance almost makes these droplets seem like coca cola-colored red blood cells. (view large if you can.)

i may have taken a wrong turn...

more of my kayak adventures on the trinity river near downtown dallas. i went a little way into a tunnel to...wow, i'm not sure i want to know where...but there were lots of fish, the water was very clear and it didn't smell, so hopefully it wasn't anyplace too awful. just thought it was unique point of view.

on my way (by kayak) to take pics of the modern, sleek-lined new calatrava bridge over the trinity river in dallas, i couldn't resist taking a look at this sturdy, but rather inelegant technology that holds one of the older bridges up just upstream.

i caught this bat taking what i thought was a nap until i got home and looked closely. now try not to grab the person next to you in a death grip, but you can totally see his beady little eye staring at you! er, me. it freaked me out a little. though i'm not sure why bats seems scary. maybe it's all the dreadful vampire movies? anyway, i doubt he was real keen about my flash, but ol' bat boy never moved. and i figure even if he was seeing stars, he's still got echolocation, right?

if anyone knows bats, please let me know what kind this little guy is. i tried to look it up and my best guess is a tri-colored bat.

a simple perspective shot taken from under and between two merging overpasses in downtown dallas. think this was part of woodall-rogers or part of the mixmaster. i don't know what road is called what down there. all i can say is, it probably looks more interesting looking as two negative forces from here than about 40 feet above.

it seems cacti love spring just as much as any other plant. the texture of those new...um, leaves on a prickly pear wouldn't exactly be the right word, would it? anyway, the whatever-they-ares were pretty cool up close.

there's an old trailer home that i'd never looked in on my folk's place in the country. i figured it was just storage or something, but i checked it out one day and found...this. it looked like someone (and perhaps something) used to live here. think it had seen better days. it had broken windows, a tree growing through it, one end torn open. you know, a bit like my house these days.

Wyly Theatre

Just a shot of the Wyly around sunset with a bit of color/contrast tweakage. It's a fascinating building in the Dallas Arts District, designed by REX/OMA. I stared at it for months while it was going up--since i parked across from it everyday on a long freelance gig. This was just a quickie shot, probably taken from my car while waiting for the stoplight, but I hope it's worthy of the building. The place has a bit of character, I'd say.

i got my manic young rescue german shorthaired pointer (soon to be named millhouse) just after a big ice storm. despite the conditions, the goofball really needed to run. fortunately, that lovely day there were two equally energetic young weimaraners for millhouse to demonstrate pointer superiority to at the dogpark. the canine ice capades game of keep away had me laughing my frozen butt off. the look on millhouse's face is classic.
