Às 16h, saí para passear de bicicleta por Paquetá. Afinal de contas, não havia nada de interessante na televisão, e o som dos trovoados sugeriu que o céu estaria interessante. A ilha mais uma vez não decepcionou.

Late afternoon I decided to take the bike out for a ride around the island. There was nothing worth watching on the TV and the sound of the thunder in the distance suggested that the skies would make for good photos. Once again, the island didn't deceive.

Sometimes I feel as if I'm living in one of Dali's paintings.

Alguém vai me dizer que na verdade é cevada, ou talvez centeio. Sempre achei difícul distinguir os grãos. Mas quase tenho certeza que é trigo mesmo.

Parece estranho que uma trilha passe pelo meio de um campo de trigo. Mas Inglaterra tem vias chamadas de "public footpaths" onde, pela tradição, o público tem o direito de andar. Os fazendeiros mantêm as vias abertas pois, senão, correm o risco de que os andarilhos decidam na hora por onde deveria ir a trilha, destruindo ainda mais a plantação.

Essa foto bati durante uma caminhada pela qual o destaque principal era um pub (The Chequers), que visitamos duas vezes: uma vez no início para tomar uma (ou duas) cervejas, outra na volta para jantar.

Somebody will probably tell me this is barley or rye. Or triticale. I'm not completely certain, but I'm fairly sure it's wheat.

Taken during a pub walk near Great Blakenham that started and finished at The Chequers: a couple of beers before setting off and a very welcome dinner at the end.

A Ponte [The Bridge]

O nome oficial é a "Ponte Presidente Costa e Silva" mas, por motivos óbvios, quase ninguém usa esse nome. É a Ponte Rio-Niterói ou, para moradores da região, "A Ponte".

A ponte tem mais que 13km de comprimento e um vão central de 72m de altura. O que não impediu que eu vergonhosamante batesse nela com meu veleiro durante uma regata alguns anos atrás.

Its official name is "Ponte Presidente Costa e Silva" (President Costa & Silva Bridge). But nobody calls it that. Presidente Costa e Silva was one of the generals that ruled Brazil during the dreaded military regime, which the majority of Brazilians prefer not to think about. So to most Brazilians it's the "Ponte Rio-Niterói" or "Rio-Niterói Bridge". If you live in the Rio-Niterói region, it's just called "A Ponte" (The Bridge).

Opened in 1974, it's over 13 km long and the central span is 72 meters high to allow the largest ships to pass. That didn't stop me bumping into it with my sailboat during a regatta a few years back.

On an average day, 140,000 vehicles cross the bridge. On holiday weekends like the present (rainy) one, it's a lot more.

Acho que tudo mundo sabe que não sou muito chegado em fotografar gatos mas esse eu não resisti!

Mais uma do passeio pelo Morro da Conceição, sábado passado.

Parece uma foto fácil mas, com pouca luz, uma rua estreita com calçada estreita, e carros estacionados próximos precisei do tripé, 1/5s, f/6.3 e a super grande angular em 14mm para conseguir uma exposição decente. Mesmo assim, a câmera pediu ISO 250.

I guess everyone knows that I'm not really one for photographing cats much, but this one was irresistible!

Another photo from the walk around Morro da Conceição on Saturday.

Looks like a simple shot, but in a very narrow street with a narrow pavement, cars parked nearby and poor light I had to use a tripod, the super-wide angle at 14mm open at f/6.3, 1/5s exposure and even then it still needed ISO 250.

O Bar do Geraldo, na Ladeira João Homem do Morro da Conceição, é um de três bares que servem a população do Morro. Fui lá com Zé Lobato e Adriana na esperança de fazer uma loooonga exposição com as mesas e cadeiras espalhadas no meio da rua, como é o costume à noite. O que eu não esperava era a chuva que, inicialmente, me aborreceu. Até que vi a luz refletida dos paralelipipedos molhados...

Ainda bem que a Fuji S5 tem boa proteção contra os elementos!

Morro da Conceição ("Conception Hill") is an unusual place in Rio. Situated right beside dowtown Rio, the occupation of the Morro (hill) dates from 1590, just 35 years after the city was founded. Along with the Morros do Castelo, do Santo Antônio and do São Bento, it formed part of the original quadrilateral about which the city grew. The Morros do Castelo and Santo Antônio were unforgiveably demolished in 1921 in the "modernisation" of the city centre. For some reason, Morro da Conceição was untouched, and retains an atmosphere redolent of its Portuguese past, with its steep and narrow streets.

Geraldo's Bar on is one of three bars on the hill. I'd hoped to get a long-exposure night shot, with the tables and chairs in the middle of the road, as they usually are at night. But, would you believe it, it rained! I'll admit I was annoyed at first. Until I saw the street lights reflecting off the cobbles...

Thankfully the S5 has decent weather sealing.

A reformada Ponte da Saudade na Praia José Bonifácio: lugar para namorar, pescar, ou atracar sua lancha (mas cuidado com as pedras!) Infelizmente não conseguiram reformar a pedra ao lado, que continua coberta de pichações.

A última da série de noturnas de Paquetá, por enquanto.

The refurbished "Ponte da Saudade" (something like "Bridge of Longing" or "Bridge of Fond Memories") in José Bonifácio Beach in Paquetá. A popular place to fish, canoodle or tie up your speedboat (or all three). Unfortunately they weren't able to refurbish the rock beside it, which remains covered in graffiti.

The last of this series of night shots of Paquetá, for the time being.

Noite na Lameirão [Night at Lameirão Beach]

Em uma das pontas da pequena Praia do Lameirão há uma casa de pescadores em frente da qual sempre há pequenos barcos de pesca artesanal atracados. Numa pedra em frente à casa há uma pequena santuária, dentro da qual há uma imagem de Iemanjá/Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes (dependendo de sua crença).

O movimento suave da água durante a exposição de 30 segundos fez com que os barcos saíssem levamente borrados.

Mais uma vez o mapa da Yahoo! inicialmente sugere que o local fica no estado de São Paulo! Só erraram por uns 300 quilômetros!

Há 3 socós escondidos na foto. Tentem encontrar todos! Não é fácil. Provavelmente vai precisar da versão grande.

At one of the ends of the tiny Praia do Lameirão beach there's a simple fisherman's home, in front of which a few rowboats are always tied up. Atop a small rock close by there's a little shrine (to the left of the photo) which shelters an image of Iemanjá/Our Lady of the Seafaring (depending on which part of the Candomblé / Umbanda / Catholic religions you follow).

The movement of the water over the 30 second exposure has blurred the boats slightly.

And once again Yahoo! maps initially suggests that the photo was taken in São Paulo state. They're only wrong by 300km!

By the way, there are 3 birds (socós) hidden in the photo. See if you can find them all. It's not that easy! You'll probably need to look at the large version.

Pescadores descansam no seu barco de remo na Praia de Catimbau, Ilha de Paquetá.

Bem à direita da foto podem ver uma pequena luz vermelha, que é uma boia que os pescadores usam para marcar a posição de suas iscas.

Exposição: 10 segundos e não mexeram.

At the far right of the photo you can just see a small red light in the water which the fishermen use to mark the poisitions of their bait in the water.

10 second exposure. They didn't move.

Enquanto andava com a minha bicicleta na Ilha de Paquetá hoje, observei um animal de uma forma extraordinária. Tinha um corpo grande, um pescoço comprido e delgado, com o que pareciam ser ondulações. Não percebi nenhum membro no animal, talvez devido a uma depressão na rua a minha frente, que escondia sua parte inferior. Ele atravessou a rua a uma distância de 20 metros e entrou nas águas da baía deixando para trás somente um rastro de vegetação quebrada.

While out cycling today on Paquetá Island I saw a most extraordinary form of animal cross the road in front of my bike. It had a large body, and a long, narrow neck, slightly thinner than an elephant's trunk, and as long as the width of the road. The body seemed to have a number of undulations. I saw no limbs, possibly because of a dip in the road obscuring the animal's lower portion. It lurched towards the bay 20 meters away, leaving only a trail of broken undergrowth in its wake.

Se parece que a foto foi batida de dentro do mar, é porque foi.

Back on the mainland just for tonight. No internet in Paquetá over the long weekend (Tuesday is a holiday, and Monday has been sequestered with it!), so I'll take the opportunity to upload this photo I took on Saturday. I could sit at that spot all day and watch the island walk past those trees.

O Bar do Sérgio, Morro da Conceição

Mais uma foto do passeio pelo Morro da Conceição.

A primeira foto da visita que subi é do Bar do Geraldo. Agora é a vez do Bar do Sérgio, que fica na rua com o nome curioso de "Rua Jôgo de Bola" (com acento mesmo). O bar funcionou como um excelente abrigo enquanto chovia forte do lado de fora. Não são somente os seres humanos que se refugem lá quando o tempo está inclemente.

A luz azul na frente vem, claro, da TV que estava mostrando o jogo de Botafogo x Vitória, que o Glorioso ganhou 1 x 0.

Another shot from Saturday's wander around the Morro da Conceição.

The first shot was from the visit was of Geraldo's Bar. This time it's the turn of Sérgio's Bar. We took shelter here for quite some time while it was raining hard outside. Humans aren't the only ones that use the bar as a refuge in inclement weather.

The blue glow from the front is from the TV, of course, which was showing the game between local team Botafogo and Vitória. After a series of 8 straight draws, Botafogo finally won, 1x0.

Note the football trophies on the top shelf at the right.

Noite na Praia Da Guarda

Oficialmente o nome é "Praia José Bonifácio" mas os moradores preferem o nome antigo - a Praia da Guarda. De dia é a praia mais movimentada da ilha. À noite, quando os turistas já pegaram a barca de volta à continente, a praia fica quase deserta.

Mas a creperia da Maria Eugênia, em frente a essas árvores fica aberta até tarde.

Officially the name of the beach is "José Bonifácio Beach" but the locals still call it "Praia da Guarda" (Policeman's Beach). During the day it's the busiest beach on the island, near to the ferry terminal. At night, when the day-trippers have returned to the mainland, it's deserted.

However Maria Eugênia's creperie, just in front of these trees, stays open until late at night.
