Alguém vai me dizer que na verdade é cevada, ou talvez centeio. Sempre achei difícul distinguir os grãos. Mas quase tenho certeza que é trigo mesmo.

Parece estranho que uma trilha passe pelo meio de um campo de trigo. Mas Inglaterra tem vias chamadas de "public footpaths" onde, pela tradição, o público tem o direito de andar. Os fazendeiros mantêm as vias abertas pois, senão, correm o risco de que os andarilhos decidam na hora por onde deveria ir a trilha, destruindo ainda mais a plantação.

Essa foto bati durante uma caminhada pela qual o destaque principal era um pub (The Chequers), que visitamos duas vezes: uma vez no início para tomar uma (ou duas) cervejas, outra na volta para jantar.

Somebody will probably tell me this is barley or rye. Or triticale. I'm not completely certain, but I'm fairly sure it's wheat.

Taken during a pub walk near Great Blakenham that started and finished at The Chequers: a couple of beers before setting off and a very welcome dinner at the end.

Não sou muito chegado em fazer fotos macro hoje em dia. Não tenho o equipamento apropriado. Mas há algumas oportunidades que não dá para perder...

Uma mosca (não é vespa, não!) e uma joaninha visitam a mesma flor (echinops) nos jardins da sede da organização de caridade "Sue Ryder Care", em Ipswich, Inglaterra.

Ficha técnica: Flash SB-600 em corda de extensão, segurado na mão (tinha preguiça de levar o tripé) com a lente Sigma 70-300mm APO no modo macro e fechada em f/16 para conseguir a profundidade de campo.

Grande em fundo preto.

I'm not one for shooting macros. I don't feel I have the equipment to do them really well. But there are still some chances I'm not going to ignore.

Hoverfly (not an expert on these, but it looks like Syrphus ribesii) and ladybird visit a globe thistle (echinops). Taken in the gardens at the headquarters of Sue Ryder Care, Ipswich.

Technical: SB-600 on cord extension off camera, hand-held (too lazy to take the tripod), with the Sigma 70-300mm APO lens on its macro setting, stopped down to f/16 to get some half-decent depth of field.

The thing on the left looks a bit like a post-modern trash can, but it is, in fact, an exploded shell, still there from when Orford Ness belonged to the Ministry of Defence (Atomic Weapons Research Establishment). To the left of the "trash can" is the footpath you're supposed to keep to (oops!). Orford Ness lighthouse can be seen in the background.

They say that Gatekeepers like to feed on bramble or ragwort, so this one must have an unusual tastes for thistles.

Taken with the Sigma 70-300mm lens in macro mode, lit by a Speedlight SB-600 off camera on an extension cord. The only way to get enough light so I could stop down the lens and get some decent depth of field.

Taken in the old AWRE (Atomic Weapons Research Establishment) at Orford Ness in Suffolk. The mast at the left belongs to a boat of traditional Suffolk design. I guess the tower was used either for communications or impact tests.

O Banco Velho [The Old Bench]

Ano passado, em nossa visita a Inglaterra, um dos lugares por onde passamos foi Felixstowe Ferry: uma simpática povoada que tem pouco para fazer, a não ser visitar o pub (vale a pena!), comer fish & chips no café (dizem que é muito bom), ou comprar peixe e mariscos fresquinhos na única loja. A povoada fica no limítrofe do campo de golfe do vizinho Felixstowe, que já é uma cidade de tamanho razoável. Enquanto bati esta foto do banco caído que fica perto do campo de golfe, uma mulher na casa atrás perguntou por que eu estava fotografando o banco. Expliquei que achei a cena interessante e meio melancólica, e ela começou a me contar a história do banco...

O banco na foto tinha sido colocado lá pela mãe dela, para substituir outro que já estava caindo em pedações. Na época o traçado do campo de golfe passava perto, a grama estava bem cuidada e as pessoas costumaram sentar no banco para assistir ao golfe. Mas, alguns anos atrás, o traçado foi mudado, se afastando desse pequeno canto. Não havia interesse mais em cortar a grama que, aos poucos, virou capim, e o banco caiu em desuso.

During our trip to England last year, one of the places we visited was Felixstowe Ferry. Strangely enough, FF is not the place were the ferries leave Felixstowe to go to the continent: it's a small village next to Felixstowe, which earns the Ferry addendum because of a small boat that, for many many years, has transported people and bicycles across the River Deben. Nowadays the ferry only runs in summer, as a tourist attraction. There's little else in FF, except for a café that, they say, serves very good fish & chips, a small shop selling freshly caught fish & seafood, and an excellent pub.

To the south, Felixstowe Ferry lies at the edge of Felixstowe Golf Course, which this old bench looks over. While I was framing this photo, a woman from the house behind asked me why I was photographing the bench. I explained that I found the scene interesting, and rather melancholic. And so she began to tell me the history of the bench...

For as long as she could remember, there had been a bench in this spot, and this was the second bench there that she knew of. It had been placed there by her mother, and substituted the previous bench which had been falling to pieces. At that time, the golf course passed quite close to this little corner, the grass was quite well kept, and the bench was used by golfers to rest a little, and passers by who would watch the golf. Some years ago, however, the golf club had altered the course, moving the fairway further away, and there was little interest in keeping the grass short. With the players more distant, and the grass growing around the bench, it fell into disuse. This time there are no plans to replace it.
