Enquanto andava com a minha bicicleta na Ilha de Paquetá hoje, observei um animal de uma forma extraordinária. Tinha um corpo grande, um pescoço comprido e delgado, com o que pareciam ser ondulações. Não percebi nenhum membro no animal, talvez devido a uma depressão na rua a minha frente, que escondia sua parte inferior. Ele atravessou a rua a uma distância de 20 metros e entrou nas águas da baía deixando para trás somente um rastro de vegetação quebrada.

While out cycling today on Paquetá Island I saw a most extraordinary form of animal cross the road in front of my bike. It had a large body, and a long, narrow neck, slightly thinner than an elephant's trunk, and as long as the width of the road. The body seemed to have a number of undulations. I saw no limbs, possibly because of a dip in the road obscuring the animal's lower portion. It lurched towards the bay 20 meters away, leaving only a trail of broken undergrowth in its wake.

Dizem que a Ilha de Paquetá é um lugar pacato mas poucos sabem que têm que acorrentar as cadeiras à noite, senão eles saem andando matando quem arrisca a andar pelas ruas. Os cisnes servem como guardas. Por isso essa praia se chama "Praia da Guarda".

Pintado à luz com uma lanterna de bolso.

They say Paquetá Island is a quiet place but, unknown to many, they have to chain the chairs at night to stop them wandering off and killing the few who risk walking the streets at night. The swans act as guards.

Hughes Léglise-Bataille in Rio, 2007

Não gosto de mudar as datas nas minhas fotos para colocá-las no início do meu photostream, mas faço uma exceção em homenagem a Hughes Léglise-Bataille, que morreu, junto com sua esposa, Andréa e cunhada, Ângela, em um acidente de trânsito na estrada entre Novo Friburgo e Teresópolis no domingo dia 13.

Hughes (ou Hugo como era conhecido no Brasil) era uma alma boa, bem como Andréa, e um excelente fotógrafo, que abandonou seu trabalho nos mercados financeiros para seguir sua paixão pela fotoreportagem.

Tive a sorte de conhecer Hughes a Andréa pessoalmente. Esta foto é da primeira vez que nós nos encontramos, no bar Oderico, em Botafogo em 2007. Na época Hughes e Andreá eram namorados. Se casaram e tiveram um filho, Arthur, que sobreviveu ao acidente.

Meus pensamentos são com as famílias.

I don't like changing the dates on my photos to bump them to the beginning of my stream, but I'll make an exception to pay homage to Hughes Léglise-Bataille (also known as Hugo in Brazil). Hughes, along with his wife, Andréa, and sister-in-law, Ângela, sadly died in a tragic road accident in Brazil on Sunday 13th.

Hughes and Andréa were one of the kindest couples I've known. Hughes was also an excellent photographer who had the courage to abandon his career in the finance industry to follow his real passion - photojournalism.

I was lucky enough to know the couple personally. The photo above is from our first meeting, at the Bar Odorico in Botafogo in 2007. At the time Hughes and Andréa were going out together. They soon married and had a son, Arthur, who survived the accident.

My thoughts are with the families.

A entrega de feno chega à ilha. O feno vem de São Gonçalo, e custa R$4 o feixe. Cada cavalo come um feixe de feno por dia.

Hay arrives at the island, and is loaded onto the carriages to be taken to the stables. The hay arrives from São Gonçalo, and costs R$4 per bundle. Each horse will eat a bundle of hay per day.

Às vezes sinto que moro num quadro de Dali.

Às 16h, saí para passear de bicicleta por Paquetá. Afinal de contas, não havia nada de interessante na televisão, e o som dos trovoados sugeriu que o céu estaria interessante. A ilha mais uma vez não decepcionou.

Late afternoon I decided to take the bike out for a ride around the island. There was nothing worth watching on the TV and the sound of the thunder in the distance suggested that the skies would make for good photos. Once again, the island didn't deceive.

Sometimes I feel as if I'm living in one of Dali's paintings.

Fui comprar pão na Padaria do Manduca, do outro lado da ilha, e aproveitei o passeio de bicicleta para visitar algumas praias do lado norte de Paquetá. Com sorte, cheguei à Praia de Lameirão quando o sol estava refletido na água.

So today I went to the bakers at the other side of the island to buy some bread, and I took advantage of the bike ride to visit some of the beaches to the North of the island. Luckily I arrived at Lameirão Beach when the Sun was reflected in the water.
