Kondo - Audio Note Company of Japan

Jeff_B. posted a photo:

My favorite system at the New York Audio Show. I could have sat in this room listening for days. It is a magical system.

The Audio Note Company of Japan was founded by Hiroyasu Kondo. Kondo San was a recording engineer at CBS/Sony who became involved with developing recording equipment. He left Sony in 1976 as he felt he couldn't achieve his dream of building the best sound system in a large corporate environment. Subsequently, he founded Audio Note.

In an intereview with TNT-Audio Kondo San had the following to say about his company's goals: "My personal yardstick for judging sound quality is Toscanini's "Un Ballo in Maschera". The album is a live recording of 1954; the 87 years old maestro suffered amnesia just a few days before, and the concert was nearly cancelled. Some may like Toscanini's reading and some may don't, but the NBC Symphony's performance is truly outstanding; the orchestra was scheduled to be dissolved within three months, so their play was ultimately tense.
The 30 inch-per-second monaural tape recording provides excellent low-frequency liveliness, and the extremely sensitive microphone's diaphragm captures the Carnegie Hall's sound space "expand" with the orchestra's fortissimo. To reproduce the genius's performances at their best is my absolute goal and this is a part of my quest for the best way to reproduce the recordings that we can see how the artists played and how they were actually recorded."

I attended the 2013 New York Audio Show this past weekend and one of the most beautiful systems on display was Symbol Audio's Modern Record Console. The Console pays tribute to the mid 20th centurey all-in-one hi-fi consoles.

The two visable speakers are driven by a 15 watt per channel tube ampifier, while a hidden subwoofer is driven by a 250 watt amplifier. In addition to playing vinyl, the unit can receive digital streaming music from any digital source through the built-in wireless router and from an iPhone, iPod and iPad.

The unit was design by Blake Tovin and Matt Richmond and each piece is bench-made to order in the Hudson Valley.

Quincy Market

Jeff_B. posted a photo:

Quincy Market, located near Faneuil Hall in downtown Boston, Massachusetts, was constructed 1824–1826 and named in honor of Mayor Josiah Quincy, who organized its construction without any tax or debt.

By the time Boston was incorporated as a city in 1822, downtown commercial demand grew beyond the capacity of Faneuil Hall. To provide an expansion of shop space, Quincy Market was built, as an indoor pavilion of vendor stalls.

Designed by Alexander Parris, the building was built immediately east of and behind Faneuil Hall, which at the time sat next to the waterfront and thus Quincy Market was at harbor's edge at the town dock. The commercial growth spawned by the new marketplace led to the reconstruction or addition of six city streets.

The market is two stories tall and covers 27,000 square feet of land. Its exterior is largely traditional New England granite, with red brick interior walls, and represents the first large-scale use of granite and glass in post-and-beam construction. The east and west facades exhibit a strong Roman style, with strong triangular pediments and Doric columns. In contrast, the sides of the hall are more modern and American, with rows of rectangular windows.

"From time to time, Pontiac's Chief Engineer John Delorean was often seen driving around Pontiac, Michigan in an early rope shaft Tempest that had been stuffed with a 389 cubic inch (6.4L) V8. This car was an engineering car that was used to determine how the compact Tempest would perform with a big motor from a full size Pontiac. The car was fun to drive and performed very well. When the 1964 A-body Tempest was to be introduced using a conventional drive line, Delorean and fellow engineers Russ Gee and Bill Collins decided to carry over that big engine concept into the new intermediate 1964 Tempest. As expected, the car performed very well. With a green light from General Manager Pete Estes and a reluctant approval from General Sales Manager Frank Bridge, the new GTO was born as an option on the 1964 Lemans."
Fort Worth Stockyards

The Stockyards celebrates Fort Worth's long tradition as a part of the cattle industry and was listed on the National Register as a historical district in 1976. The Stockyards consist of mainly entertainment and shopping venues that capitalize on the "Cowtown" image of Fort Worth. Home to the famous boot making company M.L. Leddy's which is located in the heart of the Stockyards and The Maverick Fine Western Wear and Saloon where customers can 'belly up' to the bar, relax and have a cold one; just like they did in the days of the big cattle drives. The city of Fort Worth is often referred to as "Where the West Begins." Many bars and nightclubs (including Billy Bob's Texas) are located in the vicinity, and the area has a Western motif. There is also an opry and a rodeo. The Fort Worth Stockyards are the last standing stockyards in the United States. Some volunteers still run the cattle drives through the stockyards, a practice developed in the late 19th century by the frontiersman Charles "Buffalo" Jones.

Shown in the pool is a Spheniscus Demersus, also known as an African Penguin. Unlike their cold-weather relatives, these African penguins enjoy a warmer climate and typically live along the coast of Africa. The penguins are covered in tiny feathers that help keep their skin dry and streamlined as they zip through the water. They typically live up to 20 years in the wild.
