This is a sample picture created with a new camera I just purchased (Nikon D40 6-mpix DSLR) The Nikon D40 has a "cropped" image sensor at 15x22mm, subtantially larger than the usual 1/2.3" or 1/2.5" CCD on the average pocket camera. The practical impact to the eye should be greater resolution and color depth. This camera cost about $350 used. Amazingly, my $40 used Kodak seems to be giving the Nikon a run for the money. I suspect that this is the reason for the popularity of so-called Micro 4/3 formats and other hybrid sensor designs that have stormed the prosumer camera market.

This is a sample picture created with my Panasonic DMC-F24 pocket camera. The Panasonic has 16 megapixels but otherwise has a tiny image sensor compared to the DSLRs and related kind. The Panasonic runs around $149.
