4329 N Oracle Road, Tucson, AZ Oct 16, 2011 — More great restaurants keep coming to the area around the Tucson Mall. I really enjoy sports bars! It has nothing to do with the bar part, I love an atmosphere with a million games on TV. How fun! So far, this new addition has been well-managed and is serving great food. Oh, they also have Buzztime Trivia, great for those who like to test their knowledge!

2150 N Alvernon Way, Tucson, AZ — Today I decided to check out this year’s Butterfly Magic and almost turned around. The front entry was under construction and I figured maybe it wasnt open yet. I’m so glad I decided to check just to make sure. It is open, and the featured butterflies are from Costa Rica.

The entryway is scheduled to be finished by October 15th.

This butterfly is the Owl Butterfly. It rarely sits with its wings open, usually they are closed. When closed the butterfly has the coloration of an eye, to ward off predators. Was really glad to see this one with its wings opened. The photo doesn’t look as cool as when closed, especially from this angle, but an oddity is nice to see. Once in a while.

2150 N Alvernon Way, Tucson Botanical Gardens — Butterfly Magic is back! It opens October 1, I’m so pleased!

Are you tired, but need someplace to take some great photos?
Not much walking here. Everything is in a confined area!

Are you bones sore, or you are just a little chilled? I know that’s a hard thing to imagine in Tucson, but the temps are lowering, and it won’t be long. Butterfly Magic is a wonderful place to go and warm up.

The Tucson Botanical Gardens are located on Alvernon just South of Grant. Not all that far from the Reid Park Zoo.You may want to go several times a year. At least in the past they have targeted different continents each month. So one month you can take photos of Indian butterflies, next month may be African butterflies.

Hint: You can buy butterfly guides for the exhibit in the gift shop. If you are going to share your photos, these guides are well worth it.
Historic Santa Cruz County Courthouse

21 E Court Street, Nogales, AZ Jul 23, 2010 — You will immediately recognize this as a court house from the "Lady Of Justice" on top. The only thing is, she is not wearing her usual blind-fold. How interesting!

The town's European history probably starts around 1775, much earlier than most, yet it sits in Arizona which became a state in 1912 the last contiguous state to be admitted. In 1918 it was the site of one of two significant battles on US soil in the war with Pancho Villa. The other one was in New Mexico. Just West of here was the last battle of an Indian War which lasted from 1775 to 1918.

Parts of the the movies Oklahoma, along with David and Bathseba, were filmed in or near here. And the town was mentioned in Men in Black. Nogales is a locale for Border Wars. Now that is not surprising.

I thought I would share some humming bird photos because The Southwest Wings Birding and Nature Festival starts August 1st and goes to August 4th. This is Arizona’s longest running educational celebration of birds, mammals, reptiles, and insects in the unique sky islands of Southern Arizona. This is a great chance to go birding in a guided, safe environment.

Tombstone, Cochise County, AZ Oct 22, 2011 — Allis-Chalmers is another name which has been around for a while. This model, the Model B was cranked out from 1937-1957. The color is called Persian Orange. Over 125,000 of these were built and they were known for their versatility and adaptability. Back then there were seven million farms in America and four million were only 100 acres or less. This tractor was geared to put the horse out of work in the smaller of the farms. $495 would but the tractor in the beginning, the 1957 price was $1500, it could pull a one row plow with 19 hp at the drawbar, and was sold with an optional canvas cab. I have seen some with canvas, but not many.

Tombstone, Cochise County, AZ Oct 22, 2011 — When you talk through the history of America and you talk farming, you cannot fail to mention the Farmall. At first it was a model name, then it evolved into part of the brand name manufactured by International Harvester. The tractor was a replacement for the horse. I think this model began in 1947 and I have only seen them in red. The seat was offset so you could look directly below the tractor.

Growing up this tractor could be found in almost every farmer's yard, often they were strategically placed next to mud holes. If a neighbor found himself stuck, he could easily borrow the tractor to pull himself out.

Reid Park Zoo, Tucson, AZ Jul 6, 2007 — Connie is dead. Connie and Shabba were the long-time elephant couple who used to reside at the Reid Park Zoo. The 45-year-old Asian elephant at the San Diego Zoo's Elephant Odyssey was euthanized after a long battle of fighting infections. Connie and Shaba, a mixed couple of Asian and African Elephants had enjoyed a long-term relationship at the Reid Park Zoo. The Tucson Zoo was unusual in that it offered guests to see both species of elephants. Most zoos specialize in one or the other.
Goodwill Retail Location

300 N Fourth Avenue, Tucson, AZ Jun 24, 2012 — Goodwill Industries International has a number of great locations in Tucson. This building is a great sample of how the Southwest affects architecture. I have to say, if the Goodwill retail location looks this good, you know how great Tucson looks! It is no wonder that when I walk down this street about every tenth person has a camera hanging from their neck. Tucson and Photography go hand in hand!

Yes, the thrift stores are thriving in Tucson, and they are very much worth your time, if you are into that sort of thing. This neighborhood is similar to the Belmont area in Chicago, the Telegraph Hill area in Oakland, or a number of Bohemian style neighborhoods all around the world.

One tool I used in this photo which may not be used often by some is the Lens Correction filter in Adobe Photoshop to improve the photo. When I shot the photos I tried to balance the photos the best I could, but be real. When I shot this photo, I was standing in the middle of the street, and I had pedestrians to worry about, the golden hour was upon me, and I was running out of light very quickly. So once I was in photoshop I reassessed my composition and found that using the lens correction filter I could balance the photo better and compose the photo better. Now that‘s a win-win!

You might not have noticed, but flickr recently updated their maps. Yeah!

305 N 4th Ave, Tucson, AZ Jun 24, 2012 — I've heard that this is the largest Moai tiki head in North America. I don't know about that, but I do know that tiki captures your attention.

The Hut has risen from very humble beginnings, they have great ideas, and a get-it-done spirit which is great to see!

The 25-ton Tiki had been in Tucson for the last 30 years at the Magic Carpet Golf on East Speedway. It was moved December 24, 2008.
I imported and tagged the photo with Photo Mechanic. I used Adobe Lightroom for adding camera, lens, and color profiles with basic adjustments and creating TIFFS. I used Photomatix to tone-map the five images into an HDR image. I spruced-up the image using the Topaz plug-ins: Denoise, Detail, and Adjust, then touched-up the image using Adobe Photoshop. I also used the poster edges filter in Photoshop.
