Willoway Woods Redbuds

Another redbud pano stitched together from multiple shots. These trees grow on the edge of a woods along one side of Willoway Brook in The Morton Arboretum. If you view on black you can see the drifts of bluebells growing inside the woods.

Trees in the Rain

Solid overcast when I left work today. A light rain started shortly after I got to the Arboretum. It rained just hard enough and long enough to get everything wet and saturate the colors. I was surprised to see the dogwoods were still in full bloom.

West Side Drive

Hooked on stiching multiple images into panos lately. Anyone familiar with the Arboretum will recognize this secion of the drive that winds its way through the west side.

Marmo Redbuds from Frost Hill

Redbud trees line the shoreline of Lake Marmo at The Morton Arboretum. The color reflects in the water and it is probably the most photographed spring scene in the place. The backdrop is a hill planted with spruce trees. This is the view of that shoreline looking through the spruce. Five shot pano stitch.

The Morton Arboretum is known for many things. One of the things that people come to see in spring are the redbud trees. There are hundreds of them spread out over the 1700 acre grounds, and they seem to announce that spring is here. Some of them are single trees, but many small groupings like this punctuate the spring woods. It's difficult to capture these groups in a single frame, so I decided to try stitching several frames together into a pano that would do a better job of conveying just how beautiful these trees are.

Spring Medley

Had a couple hours to kill before an appt this morning, so naturally I stopped by the Arb. This is an area that saw a controlled burn last fall. This little section of woods has definitely benefited from the ongoing managment efforts and the generous amount of rain this spring.

Another shot from yesterday at the Arboretum. This patch of bluebells used to be somewhat secluded, but word has gotten out. There were four or five other photographers here and we were all trying to stay out of each other's picture.

Dogwoods and Azaleas

I photographed this dogwood tree earlier in the afternoon in much brighter light, but just as I was leaving the Arb the sunset light brought the colors out much better.

Spring Sculpture

Went straight to the Arb again tonight after work. Photographed a patch of bluebells until sunset, then spotted this redbud on my way out and had to stop for a quick shot. I have photographed this tree before, I really like it's shape.

Armstrong Creek

Spent all day yesterday hiking at Starved Rock State Park. Much of the park is still closed due to the recent flooding, but Illinois Canyon opened up just two days ago. You could see signs of high water everywhere, lots of logs and debris piled up. It was nice to see Armstrong Creek flowing again. This creek hasn't had water in it for two years.

Got out for a while after work tonight. Very cold and wet, but the spring colors were saturated in the overcast light. Spring is very slow in coming, a couple months later than last year. It looks like the heavy rains we had could give us some great wildflowers.

At dusk the colors in the rocks of the Chiricahua Mountains really became saturated. Cave Creek Canyon, southeastern Arizona.

One of the most spectacular places in Chiricahua National Monument is Heart of Rocks. The trail that loops through this area winds in and out of these huge standing rock formations.

Daffodil Glade

I find this place very difficult to photoghraph. The setting is beautiful, with massive old oak trees and thousands of blooming daffodils, but I usually end up deleting everything. Today after work we had really nice diffused sunlight that brought out the colors without washing out the flowers. I decided not to delete this one.

Cave Creek

The second half of our Arizona trip was spent just outside the small town of Portal, at a little B&B called Cave Creek Ranch (more on that later). One afternoon just before sunset I took my camera for a long walk along Cave Creek. I was so enjoying my surroundings that I only took one picture. Five days of being unplugged from TV, radio, cell phones, internet... Glorious!

It's difficult to capture the immense scale of the Chiricahua National Monument. This is a seven shot pano of Totem Canyon taken from Inspiration Point Trail. It was bright and sunny so the light was not the best.
