Young Schoolgirl Returning Home in Tokyo

Young Schoolgirl Returning Home in Tokyo
One thing I recommend to travelers as they go from point A to point B in an unpredictable manner. Whenever I want to hit an exact location, I tell the taxi to drop me off a few kilometers from the destination. Either that, or I exit the subway early. I then meander my way from street to street and feel my way to the final location. Usually, by taking these unpredictable paths, I end up seeing a lot of things that would have been left unseen.

That is how I found this little schoolgirl in Tokyo. I ended up on a busy street in the late afternoon, just as kids were running back to their homes.
Salaryman in Tokyo

Behind me, waiting for the light to change, was this young salaryman. Salaryman is the Japanese word for "businessman". That word salaryman always cracks me up for some reason. Anyway, he was this young kid, standing there in a most unassuming way in this nice suit. I spun around and grabbed a quick shot.

He looked a little confused at me after I took it. I gave him a nod of thanks, and he smiled in a surprised way then went merrily on his way.

I have some great tips for photographing people here at the Stuck in Customs blog.

Cutting Through the Park

Here is another shot from the little video I did with Scott Kublin. He followed me around with a video camera for a while and asked me questions. It wasn't planned or anything, but it came out pretty good! I helped him and Rick a bit with their HDR photography while we moved around Olympic Park. That link above takes you to the short version of the video. The longer one is avail in Newsletter #3 -- you get a link there when you subscribe.

There is a curvy street that cuts through the middle of Olympic Park in Atlanta. It wasn't too far from here where that bomb went off in 1996 Atlanta. I was actually there with my friend Scott Sadowski when it went off! I was not too close to the blast, so I was not in any danger... but we did hear it and see the commotion. So I was there for that bombing AND I was in NYC during 9/11 and saw the 2nd plane hit the WTC. I had meetings in the financial district that day, and we ended up getting stuck in NYC for many days while the airports were shut down. Again, I was not close enough to be in danger... But... I have a knack for being in sketchy situations, I guess!
Young Buddhists about to endure the rites

Stuck in Customs posted a photo:

Away from the main temples of Angkor, this temple rests about two hours from Siem Reap through thick jungles and a sketchy road. As I made my way through the stone halls and entrance ways, I emerged onto this scene of a bunch of young Buddhists preparing for the next phase of their rites.

I think I ended up talking to almost a dozen different monks in and around Angkor. It was very interesting to hear their version of what happened with the Khmer Rouge, Pol Pot, and that whole mess. They killed over 1 million Cambodians after the US pulled out of Vietnam, eliminating anyone with “involvement in free-market activities”. I was a little afraid to tell anyone there that I sometimes speak at Libertarian conferences, in case there were a few rogue Khmer Rouge agents roaming the jungles!

Some of the stories are a bit sketchy to be reprinted in this format, so if we ever meet for coffee some day, I’ll be glad to tell you… but there is some messed up stuff around there.

On a lighter note, I’m headed to Vegas next week for just a day and a half. I have a little speaking engagement, but I’ll be spending every spare waking moment living with my right brain and seeing what bits are appropriate to capture for you all! :)
Singing in a Small Seaside Tavern near Singapore

I spent a weekend in the seaside town of Malacca, which used to rival Singapore in the beginning of the 1900's as the busiest port in SE Asia. Over time, the dutch built up Singapore and allowed Malacca to stay small and quaint. It's still the same way, with the old architecture lining the streets. The old warehouses and shops of the early century are now converted in to taverns, shops, and temples.

As I was moving around from place to place taking photos, I heard some acoustic guitar coming from a small empty tavern. I went in and met Aki here, who was warming up for a concert later than night in the same place. I asked her if she could take a photo while she practiced, and she said of course and then invited me to see her sing later that night.

I am sure cramming three or more people on a motorcycle looks surprising, but, surprisingly, my surprise began to subside after just a few days. I think the MOST I saw on a motorcycle was 6 people... a mom and dad and 4 kids squnched in between. I never got a great shot of that...

...as I was walking around Jogjakarta, I did find this young mom and her two kids off on their daily errands.

Here I am in the middle of Times Square in New York on a perfect night. The sky was this strange blue color of a cool dusk night and every light in the city was in full burn. Enjoy!

Here we have Isabella... at the park on a Sunday afternoon. Higher higher! :) BTW, when taking pictures of your kids on a swing, there is NO safe place to stand. Somehow the Newtonian physics of a swingset always bring a kid barreling into you from well beyond the expected two planes of Cartesian motion.

This is part of a new video tutorial entitled "A World of Textures" that I recently put together. Included is also 100 textures, depending on the package you choose.

I am not yet in first place in my misplaced nomination for "Hottest Daddy Blogger" - I think I am on page 3 behind a blogger named "DrunkenStepFather" who seems to have a lot of links to porn. I was completely disgusted after I spent 7 hours on his site. Surely you guys can vote me ahead of him at this link - bloggerschoiceawards.com/blogs/show/1228
