Trees in Yosemite

I’m not really an “expert” on Yosemite by any means! I’ve only been there once, and I know there are many photographers that have been there 5 or 10 or more times! I spent most of my time driving around the main roads and going off on little mini-hikes. But I didn’t really know the best places to go… so I would hike along little creeks and get shots like this.

I remember I did a little walk to a place called “Mirror Lake” or something. It sounded so awesome from the name! But then I got there, and it was just a puddle of ice. I felt ripped off! They should change the name of it every hour depending on what it currently looks like. There’s no way I would have walked to “Dirty Ice Ugly Lake."

I took a six hour drive through part of the Hangzhou. At some point, it began to get very hilly and moody. The ride was a little rough, so I would pull over from time to time to take breaks.

One time when I popped out, I thought the road and the scene felt fairly cinematic. I went through the old routine of opening up the tripod for a shot…

Is that water cold? Yes, yes it is.

I know the surface is cold – the kind of cold that makes every human survival instinct go haywire. But I wonder what it is like down at one mile in depth. It must be so strange and eerie down there. If anyone has ever seen any footage or images of what it looks like in those frigid depths, be sure to share!

I went around a bend in Milford and was greeted with these strange lost-world type trees. You can see the famous Mitre Peak there on the right. There is a wide array of lush vegetation around here because of the constant moisture. There’s even a surplus of moisture here because of a huge waterfall that is right behind me, coating everything in a fine mist all day long.

It was about 2 A.M. and the sun was just dipping into the horizon for a short stint. These horses were frolicking about in a huge flat field a bit inland from the end of the fjord. They were all so lively and alert, jumping and posing here and there. And then they set up in a very interesting configuration, and I barely had time to put on the right lens before it all drifted apart.

A few nights ago I went for a walk along the water’s edge here in Queenstown. About one out of ten nights (or, as far as I have measured), there is a clear night with a bright pink light that shoots up from behind those mountains. It’s really quite a sight.

I went down to the edge of the lake and buried my tripod legs in the frigid, icy-clear water. Even though the color of the light was so nice, in the end it was not as interesting as the light itself.

I spent about a week in Yosemite, and every day had slightly different light. I was quite sad there was no snow the entire time, but I am excited to go back and see it!

Even though there was no snow, I was quite cold. I tried out a new set of gloves which were quite crappy. I think the only kind of situation I like when it is cold is those mittens that flip up so I can use my fingers. I had the perfect mittens, but then I lost one of them, so now I only have one mitten, and this is a sad thing.

While in the meadows between the mountains of Yosemite, I did not expect to see this little church.

And waiting for the right kind of light was another challenge. The light down in the valley is so strange. The sheer walls of the mountains on both sides are so steep that the sun disappears quite early in the day. Everything becomes a little-bit-dreamy then, and I felt like that was a good time to take the shot.
Oak on Winter Sunrise

I hiked through a frost-covered meadow in the morning to get up under this tree. And it was one of those meadows with very long grasses that formed little frosty mounds. They gave way with each step with the sound of a tiny crunch that spring back up after you pass. But the moisture is so light and cool, it is not even noticed until you look down and see your shoes have a slick coating of their own.

I then got up underneath this old oak tree with my wide-angle lens, aiming it in the direction of the rising sun. Because I was so deep in the valley, the sun did not crest for another three hours, but the light dithered in different ways the whole time.

Getting to the top of these mountains happened just in time, late on a cool, crisp day on one of my first afternoons in Switzerland. I knew things would be beautiful way up here in the upper atmosphere, but I honestly did not expect the streaming confluence of flowing ice. This is always a nice and unexpected aspect of glaciers - how they look like they are flowing and still at the same time.

The fjords of Northern Iceland weave in and out of the ocean, each one ending with a strong peninsula that juts out into the sea. Just on the inland side of these wide peninsulas, there are many lakes and little farms that sit nestled between little mountains and hillocks. They fit in so naturally that you almost don't even notice them. I try to take extra care to notice every one.

For this one, I got out of my car and went on a short hike over to this little stream that ran alongside the old home.

While in Iceland, I traveled through a lowlands area early in the morning. A mist -- a video-game-mist -- started moving quickly across the ground and through the distant hillocks. It was all so surreal that I barely remembered that I should be taking a photo of this. That was a strange feeling, since the whole reason I was there was to take photos! :)

This is one of the rivers in Argentina that was uncrossable.
I really wanted to get to the other side because I knew there were some angles. I hiked up and down both sides trying to see if there was some way to make it happen, but it was just impossible. Oh well! It was a pretty walk if nothing else...
The Beginning of Time

Stuck in Customs posted a photo:

I spent most of a weekend working on this photo. One common question is, "How long do these photos take?" They take me anywhere from a few minutes to a few days. It's not contiguous work, of course, but some are so challenging that I have to keep returning to them time and time again.

This spot in northern central Iceland is a bit perilous to reach. It's so perilous here at Godafoss, in fact, that I am glad my mom didn't see me getting into position. Is the water cold? Yes, yes it is.

On the final night of the Yosemite PhotoWalk, we ended up here to explore the evening. This is the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite, and I hope I made it look as beautiful as it really is. This is also the place that Steve Jobs got married.

Karen Hutton and I arrived here very late at night after our extra-long walk! We could even see a few people camping for the night halfway up the mountain they were climbing. After going around the back side of the lodge, we saw the stars and trees and cliffs above...
