Coming Home to the Inn After Dinner

This is a nice feeling -- this idea of walking to dinner and arriving back at the inn with family and friends just before it gets dark. I don't know how to explain it, but perhaps you have experienced this too.

This is in the far northern part of the South Island if New Zealand. The town is named Nelson, and I think it is one of the five biggest on that island. But all of New Zealand only has four million people, and the vast majority of those are on the north island. I wonder what has happened to towns like Nelson since the big earthquake in nearby Christchurch. Maybe some of our NZ community readers can fill us in with some on-the-ground info.

The Pond and the Sunset Stormclouds

I had a wonderful evening with Eden Brackstone, even though he uses a Canon. I can overlook these trifle matters, but I do not forget them lightly.

We were in Gibbston, New Zealand, about 20 minutes from Queenstown. After a wonderful dinner with his delightful family, I popped out onto his farm to shoot some HDR. He started recording video on his aforementioned Canon-thing, and put together the little dealio at the link below. Enjoy!

Here is the final photo that was taken just before I we started recording the video.

The Golden Pavilion, or Kinkaku-ji for my new Japanese friends

This is one of the most famous temples in Kyoto, so of course I had to go. It's sort of like going to the Eiffel Tower in Paris or Rudy's BBQ in Austin.

It was originally built back in 1397 and has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. The building itself is as meticulous as the gardens around it. The Japanese really know how to tend a garden! There was a fleet of workers all over the grounds, sweeping up and rearranging little bits here and there. It was all very quaint and wonderful.

The Park in Buenos Aires

I didn't get enough sunsets in BA, but I tried to make the most of what I had! This picturesque park was enormous. And I mean enormous. We walked for miles before finding our final destination, which we made it to just in the nick of time. The parks of Buenos Aires were pretty much what I imagined... the Argentineans stroll around parks with a certain sense of style. It's hard to explain...but kinda cool.

Also, Jim Austin has written a nice article about HDR for Apogee Photo Magazine entitled "Symphony in a Moment: HDR Nature Photography from Eight Maestros". Very nice of him to call me a maestro - not sure I deserve that! The photo he included I have put below... of that amazing mountain range called Fitz Roy. The way to catch that orange-pink morning light was to hike up another mountain in pitch-black conditions. It was certainly worth it, traversing the icy crest, catching that glimpse of the sun coming over the horizon of the Andes.

The Silky Fountain - and a new video - Walkin' around with Trey!

My friend Scott has posted a new video on my HDR Photography that features me walking around Olympic Park in Atlanta taking photos. It's up on his blog, so follow that link over to take a look! He's just starting to learn more and more about photography, and he asked if he could follow me for a while with a video camera. I told him that would be perfectly fine. He was nice enough to edit it together into a nice little 8-minute piece there. I hope you enjoy it.

There is one part of the longer video where I set up to take a shot of the Coke Museum. Scott didn't get the security guard walking up to us... but at least you can see a bit of the situation on the ground and what a threat we were posing!

This photo below is one of the many I took that evening with Scott and Rick. I described the best way to get these silky strands on the waterfall... everyone likes those, right?

On Frozen Pond

I probably should not have been standing in the middle of this frozen pond.

But when you are raised in Texas and you rarely get to see anything frozen, you get fascinated by large frozen bodies of water. I just stared at it for a long time like a deer that's never seen headlights in the forest. I felt the saying, "When in Rome", and somehow replaced it with "When in Reykjavik..."

I slowly shuffled my feet out to the middle, using my tripod as an Imperial Hoth Walker to secure my footing. Once I got to the right spot for the lens, I ripped off a few shots before heading over to the safely of the shore.

This looks nice: Large on White

I found a nice bench and sat there for about an hour, drinking coffee, with my hand on the remote control. Oh, here come some more birds... snap snap... have some coffee... look there's the sun... more birds now... snap snap snap... coffee is good... better increase that ISO those birds are fast... look at those clouds... more birds... snap snap... is this place real? snap... omg how am I going to process all these pictures... snap snap... thank god I have a lot of memory cards.... okay now the sunrise is even better... why did I waste those earlier shots? More birds... go slower please birds.. snap... coffee running low... okay time to move on I have a meeting soon... okay one more snap.
