onOne Plugin Suite Review

This software and these cool onOne tools are amazing and fun. I really dig them! I've been tinkering and experimenting for quite a while, and I finally decided to get my act together and write a full review.

People that joined the Facebook Fan Page got a sneak preview of this review, and now I can open it up to the rest of the world - I hope you enjoy it!

The onOne Plugin Review holds all the secrets and more inside. If you enjoy seeing what the latest technology can do to your photos, well, then, you'll love all unexpected surprises that will open themselves in your computer!

Castle in the Black

Stuck in Customs posted a photo:

I had a hard-edged rule that I am now considering breaking. Who am I kidding? I'm gonna break it for sure.

Now that Ethan is eight, we've been able to take him to Disneyworld a few times. Isabella is three and she has never been. I had a rule that it is silly to take kids on vacation before they are five, since you really can't form long-term memories before that age. Yes yes, I know... Some people disagree with this. Like my wife. She says it is not good that there will be a missing child from our family vacation photographs, no matter how good I am at photoshopping Isabella's head on a stunt-body. I try to offer the counterargument that a sub-five-year-old can have the same quantifiable amount of fun (within an acceptable margin of error) while at home with Disney movies. This, then, is thrown back in my face with my three-year-old having a dangerous fascination with Cinderella's castle. She can hardly believe that it is a real place.

So now we are going to take her to Disneyworld. Not for her, but for us. Well, also for her. Okay it's kind of for all of us. Rule broken.

Arriving Home in Vegas

Vegas is filled with all these cool secret spots. I suppose this one isn't all that secret, but I had never heard of it! This is the entrance to the Skylofts At MGM Grand Las Vegas. And this is just the elevator bank! I got a nice little private tour of some of the suites and they were quite amazing. I have those pics sitting in waiting, still unpublished. At first, I was thinking these were the kinds of places that were saved for the uber-elite whales of Vegas, but the prices aren't that different than a nice Four Seasons.

I've been working on editing a new video of how I took an HDR photo in Yellowstone. I'll give a first look to everyone that is on the Newsletter list. We'll try to get that thing out this weekend or so! Now, I can tell you that as I edit this thing... it's very shaky! What can I say... I just used one of those little Flip Video jobs. So, obviously, I'm trying to undersell the thing.... but maybe y'all can get some good information about how I took one of the Yellowstone shots.

South by Southwest is a huge music, film, and interactive festival down here in Austin. People from all over the world come here to what has become known as the music capitol of the world. Many streets shut down for all kinds of interesting activity. I went out an evening ago to get some shots of some of the action on the streets to share with you all. I usually don't do these sorts of shots, but I wanted to mix it up a little so you could see a local slice of life right here in my hometown! :)

Note - much of the text below is in regards to www.stuckincustoms.com

Hey everyone! Now that we have such a thriving little community here of clever commenters and cool people, I wanted to have a little site update day. There are a few interesting things and events that some of you might want to know about.

First, the site is more popular than ever! I thank YOU for telling your family and friends about it. I'm glad you find something unique about it and use it to find out unexpected things about yourself. I am sure that the word of mouth has made it as popular as it is. By every measure, we are now the #1 Travel Photography Blog on the internet. That's no small thing! Traffic estimates are always very difficult to gauge, even with advanced tools. Google Analytics, RSS feeds, and the like have us somewhere between 300,000 and 350,000 unique visitors per month. Many of you come every day to see the latest photo, and that gets our total visits up into the millions. There are all kinds of interesting little stats too that you may find boring... like only 2.11% are using dialup...everyone is broadband now. The visitors are worldwide - from Bangladesh to Tibet to Brazil. It's very nice suddenly having so many friends from around the world -- I am honored that you like it here so much.

Second, the site is currently about to be unleashed with a whole new design! I have hired one of the best designers in the world, Fabien Barral, to come up with a new creative theme around the site. Fabien's work is well known around the world and has a distinctive look. If you've ever been in Paris and walked around the streets, you have probably seen posters and art that was created by him. It's one of those looks that just "feels" very French and different... you absolutely get the impression that you are looking at something special and different when you are seeing his work. For example, big movie companies hire him to make the French versions of posters for movies like Elizabeth. Here is a sample of that, and more of his work... and some more....

Third, there are scent trails all over. I appreciate all the Flickr visitors very much too. This is not a true measure of photo views, and it only registers for the subset of people that visit the Flickr photos. But we are up to over 16 million views there... I put that screenie below, although it is about a month old now. My emails are also overflowing with 22K unreads... sorry for that! I need some kinda system here! I feel bad for all the nice people that send out such heartfelt emails and I don't have time to respond... my apologies.

Last, Social Networking Update! I know that many of you use a lot of social networks like me... if you want to keep the digital vapor trail alive, here are the details for you... Speaking of this Facebook Fan Club... I don't know what to do with that. I know groups now have discussion boards on there in FB, so I suppose people could talk about general stuff instead of having to limit comments to one photo post or another. I'm not sure... like anything, we'll see where all this stuff goes!
My Intertubes Nine Lives:

Holy Obama! 16 million views - thank you Flickr guys and gals - you're the best!

I recently gave a few talks here in Austin (one at UT and one at ACC) about photography, this technique, and various other meandering topics on the brain and perception that I hope did not bore the crowd! This is one of the photos that we worked on during the class, so I thought I would upload to share with everyone!

I tracked this guy for over two hours through the wilderness. He knew I was following him for sure as we would move from trees to fields then back to trees. After the first 10 minutes, it was obvious that he was a million times more agile... and I was a million times more dirty. After the event, not only was I covered in dirt and leaves, but it took me half an hour to figure out where in the world the road and my car was!
It must gave been a five hour drive from one end of Montana to another. After just a bit, you get mesmerized by the wheat fields.

Driving along, I always start to play games with the clouds and the objects on the horizon. This might sound strange, but I do enjoy seeing them in Euclidean geometric formations... so much so, that I had to jump out of the car to capture this.

There is a special night at Disney when they close the park for everyone except for the people that bought special passes to the Pirates and Princesses Party. Things were still pretty busy as we scurried around from one stop to another to collect treasure and engage in the booty-like festivities.

They even had a bunch of Johnny Depps running around (one of them rather convincing), taking photos and giving impromptu sword-fighting lessons. I had read a story about a Johnny Depp-lookalike that worked at Disneyworld that had a secret blog... about all the crazy things that would happen behind the scenes with all the randy moms.

Anyway, the finale of the night was this massive fireworks display on top of the Cinderella Castle... it was more than my 10mm could grab!
The Fireworks Explosion at Disney During the Pirates and Princesses Party!

A Sea of Sunflowers

Stuck in Customs posted a photo:

I was driving back from the dinosaur dig up near Canada, feeling awfully tired on the highway between Butte and Bozeman. The hour was around sunset and then I suddenly saw this enormous field of sunflowers... it was just sitting there... with no one taking photos of it... I thought it was a shame so pulled over and ran out into the field to get some shots before the sun dipped below the horizon.

These sunflowers were TALL. They must have been 6 feet off the ground. To get the shot, I extended the tripod, kept the legs together, put the camera on a 5 second timer, and hoisted it in the air again and again until I finally found the angle I wanted.

For you cool photo-nerds (like me), I kept the ISO at 320 and EV+2. The lens was at 14mm and the ap at 4.8. The exposure was .004 secs.

If you want to see how I made this (and how you can too!), visit my HDR Tutorial. I hope it gives you some new tricks!

This is a really nice little church by a graveyard in the south of Iceland. It was pretty much out in the middle of nowhere, as you can tell. The gate with the cross on the top leads to a tiny and lonely graveyard. Graveyards are always interesting and macabre places for photography, and the mood changes dramatically depending on the time of day. I notice there are a few things that are "Mood Amplifiers" in photos. These are items to include in your photo to take whatever mood is being conveyed to the next order of magnitude. These include: graveyards, churches, dogs, pretty women, miniature horses, and blood. I've been trying to think of a way to include all of these elements into a single mind-blowing photo, but a clear path has yet to present itself.

Each of these "bells" is really a stone cage that houses a Buddha statue that is seated, facing outwards. At this time in the morning, you can take little flashlights and peer inside the cages. It's all very eerie and fun...

In the distance, you can see a few volcanoes poking through the mist.
The sunrise as the caged Buddhas look on...

If you want to see how I made this (and how you can too!), visit my HDR Tutorial. I hope it gives you some new tricks!

Each of these "bells" is really a stone cage that houses a Buddha statue that is seated, facing outwards. At this time in the morning, you can take little flashlights and peer inside the cages. It's all very eerie and fun...

In the distance, you can see a few volcanoes poking through the mist.

I checked the sweet internet earlier in the day to see exactly what time sunset was in Yellowstone. I have the sunrise/sunset website bookmarked, which is kinda strange, maybe... Anyway, It said 7:03 or something like that. I knew full well that it means the exact moment when the sun dips below the horizon, so the sun really "sets" about 30 minutes before that... but that didn't help me get into the right position to see the sun right before it dipped below the mountains.

Luckily, there was a fine band of yellow sky lit up above the mountains, reflecting across the Madison River.

I could hardly figure out where to look first! I was happy to have a second pair of eyes there with my camera, so I could look at one thing while the lens and attached remote looked at something else! Every 10 minutes the clouds moved and the light changed, creating a different scene as I snapped away in bliss.

You can feel the morning humidity hanging on the air over the lagoon. It was a little after 5 in the morning at Angkor Wat, and a small Cambodian girl had brought me a little chair to sit down in by the water. She also brought coffee and condensed milk, refilling me every 20 minutes or so. I think the chair and the coffee was the the best $2 I ever spent!

This red-stoned temple had hundreds of tiny rooms scattered all over the grounds. The light streamed in from many angles to light up the walls and carved details. I only wish I was around 1000 years ago with my anachronistic digital camera... that would have been good, except for the no flickr part.
