The Glowing Louvre

Stuck in Customs posted a photo:

Here’s another photo from the amazing PhotoWalk in Paris. This was supposed to be the end of the walk, but it ended up being the halfway point!

In post-processing this one, I made the Louvre feel a little more warm and inviting, while the outside stayed a bit more cold and foreboding. I edited this one in front of a live class in Christchuch… I hope people enjoyed that bit ! :) Not all of my edits were successful that day, but I think this one turned out alright.

While in Iceland, I traveled through a lowlands area early in the morning. A mist -- a video-game-mist -- started moving quickly across the ground and through the distant hillocks. It was all so surreal that I barely remembered that I should be taking a photo of this. That was a strange feeling, since the whole reason I was there was to take photos! :)

On my first evening in Yosemite, the sun did some amazing things. There as a big group of Google+ people converging on Yosemite, but I arrived a day early for a little "me" time. Nature must have felt my mojo because it all conspired to create some interesting results as the rays tumbled across the valley floor.
I'm not completely sure, but I think this is one of the many remote weather stations scattered around Iceland. They are these perfect little triangular things that sit there, as lonely as can be.
The Rest of the Chinese Snake Story

I had climbed up and down the spires of Zhangjiajie twice, which is twice more than my legs wanted to go.

I foolishly went up one of the spires at sunset trying to get a photo. I got to the top, and there was no good sunset. It was still awesome and everything -- just no sunset photo. And getting up is not easy. There are little stairs caved into the sides of the mountain that spiral up and through inlaid cave systems. There is occasional ducking and a lot of worry about slippery bits.

So the time had come to descend. It was dark. Bear-den dark. I had a little light on my camera strap (not really a full-on flashlight like I should have had). I kept it on as I walked back. It was about a four kilometer back through these spires alone. I never saw another human, and I didn't expect to see anything -- until I almost stepped on this snake ...
Soft Zurich at Night

These slow-moving huge rivers make for some very nice reflections.

With HDR there is a problem of "ghosting" which is when the various frames show different things. I usually leave the water alone when it gets ghosted because it has sort of an impressionistic feel to it, I think. In a sense, it gives the "impression" of water, which is somewhere between a photo and our memory.

With HDR there is a problem of "ghosting" which is when the various frames show different things. I usually leave the water alone when it gets ghosted because it has sort of an impressionistic feel to it, I think. In a sense, it gives the "impression" of water, which is somewhere between a photo and our memory.

People are always around this thing! If you've been there, then you know what I mean... getting a clean shot is almost impossible, unless you visit just after sunrise.

In this case, I don't photoshop out the people, but I minimize them... so the photo isn't really about the people, it's about the Louvre. But, with a wide angle lens, you have to get right up on the thing.
Iceland is pretty. Do I have to keep saying it? Maybe I do... you know... you know how a girl likes to be reminded in a gentle way all the time that she is pretty? Yes, I guess I can extend this to Iceland... so... you may tire of me saying it, but I'll keep saying how pretty Iceland is.

Early one morning while weaving through the fjords, a cell of dark clouds roiled across the sky. The low sun kept them in impossible colors and the air vibrated with a coming storm. This is up on the edge of the arctic circle where one fjord may be covered in clouds while the next is wide open and clear. There are hundreds of little microclimates that change from one hour to the next, so if things don't look good in one fjord, just spend 30 minutes driving over to the next one, and maybe something different will present itself. Surely by now, you see why I like Iceland so much in the summer...

I like all the colorful votives. They make everything a bit more festive.... Cathedrals can be sort of melancholy places, so anything to liven things up a bit are a nice change of pace.
I didn't make it to the Summer Palace until my final evening in Beijing, and I was graced with a delicate sunset.

This place is also called the "Gardens of Nurtured Harmony" and it rests on top of "Longevity Hill", a very Chinese-folk-sounding name. What is kind of interesting is that this entire area was manmade, and the huge hill was built out of dirt when they excavated the man-made lake!

It is a truly beautiful place, as you can plainly see. I could not have asked for a better place to explore on my last night in China.
Evening at the Summer Palace

I didn't make it to the Summer Palace until my final evening in Beijing, and I was graced with a delicate sunset.

This place is also called the "Gardens of Nurtured Harmony" and it rests on top of "Longevity Hill", a very Chinese-folk-sounding name. What is kind of interesting is that this entire area was manmade, and the huge hill was built out of dirt when they excavated the man-made lake!

It is a truly beautiful place, as you can plainly see. I could not have asked for a better place to explore on my last night in China.

You know how sometimes you go some place awesome and you think, "This is really cool, I think I'll probably come back some day." But then, sometimes, after the event, you start thinking that maybe you may not be able to make it back. You never really know I guess. Anyway, when I do go back to the Louvre in July, I'm going to spend a day inside sketching. I do like to sketch (I have a few on the About Me page), and this seems like a great place to do it. I wish I had a whole month in Paris... I'd try to go here once a week for a day of sketching. Maybe I should put this on my to do list... why not?
Maybe one of our smart readers knows exactly where it is. Anyway, the place was quite beautiful, as you can see. It was also pretty much empty, so I had no trouble moving around to find the interesting shots.

Under the Louvre

Stuck in Customs posted a photo:

Under the Louvre
This is a definite no-no land for tripods, so that made me re-double my efforts to make this shot happen under the glass pyramid of the Louvre.

With the sun in my face, there was no way I could make an HDR out of a single RAW, and I knew I needed seven exposures, from +3 to -3 to make it happen. I ran around in circles to save up some bullet-time, and then I quickly unfurled my RRS tripod. It spun and rotated like the Hellraiser cube until I had it perfectly situated. I took my seven shots as quickly as possible before two security cards came over to get me.

I couldn't Michael-Weston my way out of that one because my French is so bad, so I just slowly folded up my tripod while giving them a knowing grin. I wanted it to be the kind of grin that ate into their souls... but, I think they were just generally annoyed with me and wanted me to hurry the heck up.

One of my favorite museums! I'm a huge fan of Impressionism, and this museum has an amazing collection. It also houses one of the most famous paintings by Manet - Le dejeuner sur l'herbe (Wikipedia). I've always heard about and studied this painting, so it was of particular interest to me. When I saw it in person, it was absolutely striking... I did not expect to have a reaction like that.

Well, you aren't supposed to take photos in here, but I just can't help it. I think the rule is silly and somewhat insulting to he artist in me. I remember studying the Impressionists... Manet himself would come into museums and paint... so what is the difference? Nothing... I think my Impressionist heroes are looking down on me and smiling for defying such a silly rule. In this case, I did not use a tripod (would have been a bit obvious). So I cranked up the ISO on my camera to keep everything sharp. Also, I set my F stop at 2.8, which keeps a scene like this in focus when you're using a wide angle lens, since everything is effectively at infinity.
Secret Treasures of Beijing

These little finds are everywhere! Sometimes, while stumbling around from alleyway to alleyway, I appear right in the middle of these perfect little scenes.

It was very close to the National Day, and crews were out freshening-up the city. There were about four Chinese painters that were busy putting a fresh red coat of paint on this perfect little bridge. By chance, they were just finishing up as I approached. This little boat from the painters was pulled up beside the bridge in a wonderful way, so I set up my tripod along the bank for a photo.

They all looked at me in a confused way. They had no idea why I would want to take a photo of their little boat and the bridge. I imagine they find this so commonplace as to be hardly worthy of a photo... and it makes me wonder about all the non-photographers (or fans of this site) out there. Perhaps they just go through life and don't even notice anything interesting pretty and nicely composed. What an empty visual life this must be!
Perhaps they just go through life and don't even notice anything interesting pretty and nicely composed. What an empty visual life this must be!

Don't you hate/love that pressure-zone of the sunset? Well which one? I of course love it... but the pressure to move around and get as many good shots as possible is pretty hardcore. I plan it all out like I'm playing an RTS game. I'm constantly calculating compositions, timings, and the logistics of getting from one point to another. Every situation is different... if I am on foot, with vehicle, or on bike.
