Cattle Roundup in North Texas

From an authentic Texas cattle round-up, circa, 1982 near Graham, Texas. Originally commissioned as a "double-truck" background spread in the last Cutter Bill catalog.

Used a "gyro-stabilizer" for a 1/4 second shutter speed, hand-held (a tripod was worthless with the dynamic actions of all the players) and a 24mm Canon FD lens.

Film: Kodachrome 64
Camera: Canon F-1n

Blew out the sky detail, but couldn't help that. It was dawn, no clouds and the shot was compositionally fragile - right after I clicked the shutter, the cow jerked, jumped up (as did the cowboy) and the shot fell apart.

...but I got this - and it's been a prize winner, too.

Late sunset light is the best isn't it?

Photo data: Canon F-1n, 85-300mm at about 250mm zoom, Fujichrome 100 slide film, hand held. Exposure probably was about f/4 @ 1/125 (yes, I got lucky - no blur...)

Impending storm at sunset in the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center and preserve near Glen Rose, Texas - finds these brindled gnus unfazed and unmoved.

Photo made with my first digital camera - a Nikon 5700 - and from the window of my car, briefly stopped before we quickly left to avoid the rainshower. Color is as close to reality as I could make it for the digital realm. It actually appeared more intense.

Threat and Desire - Calico Cat and Goldfish

My calico cat "Cookie" eyes a goldfish. No animal was harmed and no "Photoshop" was used in the making of this photograph. (It was used to touch-up small bits of flotsam & jetsam, but not used in the making of...)

This is a single shot with minimal Photoshopping to clean up the bubbles and small bits of fish-poop in the water. Hassleblad medium format camera; 250mm telephoto with extension tube @ f/45 and strobe lighting; FUJI Velvia 50, scanned with Nikon Coolscan 9000 at full resolution. Shot was a personal experiment, and entered into competition in our local camera club.

Got 2nd place.

Drat.

Patterns are where you find them...and I'm not talking about the spots on the hide of this young buck. This photo - a snapshot, truly - is more about the visual similarity in the rack on his head and the rake of angle in the tree of the background.

In the language of photography - it's a visual simile...

...Oh well, it never works as well when one has to explain it...

Butterfly and Ocatillo

On the upper canyon wall path that runs alongside the Rio Grande river in Santa Elena Canyon, this ocatillo gave rest to the butterfly...and me the chance to make a photograph - "bad" light and all.

Dog O'My Heart: Guinness and Robbie

Part of a self-assigned series for my wife's upcoming book, "Dog O'My Heart" - Guinness and Robbie were in Monrovia, California at the time. Robbie is the son of some dear friends; Guiness is their bear chasing rottweiler. We shot this in the shade of a porch - but with a 2PM afternoon sun - trying to beat a deadline for an evening Amtrak train back to Texas.

Camera: Hasslebad, 150mm lens
Film: Fujichrome 100, 120mm.
Scanned on a Nikon 9000 Coolscan.
Strobist data: Norman 4K pak, 1 head at 2K, through a single 72" Chimera soft box at left + reflector at right + used the sun light & balanced it for hairlight. Exposure was probably around 1/125 @ f/16 or so...verified with Polaroid PN55 Polapak film.
