An image for Holy Week 2011: the famous statue of La Macarena or the Virgin of Hope in Seville, Spain.

It is considered by many as one of the most beautiful representations of the Virgin Mary. Each year the statue is carried around the city during Holy Week.

Mary is depicted with Jesus, St Anne and St Joseph. Mary’s cloak offers shelter to people who have come to seek protection from the bubonic plague. Below one can read the opening line of the ancient prayer Suub Tuum Praesidium:

Under thy protection we seek refuge,
Holy Mother of God.
In the New Testament John foretold the coming of Jesus and was the one who baptised Jesus in the river Jordan. Interestingly John is not only a significant figure in Christianity. He is also seen as a prophet in Islam, the Bahá'í faith and Mandaeism.

Hands of Fatima

☞ Infinitas Gracias posted a photo:

An important Christian icon merges with a famous Islamic one: Our Lady of Fatima & the Hand of Fatima.

The hand of Fatima is also known as the hamsa hand (Arabic) or chamesh hand (Hebrew). It is an old and still popular amulet for magical protection from the evil eye. It is believed that the eye protects from evil and draws positive energy, happiness, riches and health. The hamsa (semitic root meaning five) sometimes includes five digits and symbolises God’s protective hand. In the Islamic tradition the five fingers can also represent the five pillars of the religion: the five duties incumbent on every Muslim.

Interestingly, the hand has been given female names by both Jews and Muslims. The Jews called it the Hand of Miriam, after the sister of Moses and Aaron. Muslims call it the Hand of Fatima, after the prophet Muhammed's beloved daughter. This means that both names are linked to Mary, the mother of Jesus: through the Hebrew name Miriam (=Mary) and through the village of Fatima, a village named after a legendary Muslim princess who converted to Christianity and where Mary appeared in 1917. This makes the hamsa a symbol that touches upon the tradition of all the three religions of Abraham.

18th century German copper engraving of Saint Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata on Mount Alverna in 1224.

During the Lent of 1224, two years before his death, his mind and heart turned frequently to meditate upon the suffering of Christ and His obedience to the Father. Retreating with Friar Leo into the wilderness, Francis agonized over the great pain that Jesus experienced and thanked our Lord for the supreme sacrifice that He had endured.

On 14 September 1224, in the solitude of prayer on Mount Alverna, while praising God and pouring out his love for Him, Francis beheld the crucified Christ borne aloft by six wings. In this moment of seraphic ecstasy, he who had sought to imitate Christ in all things, received the marks of his Lord’s crucifixion—the stigmata—on his hands, feet, and side.
