As you head up the stairs in the Crucible Theatre, the large banner with the Crucible's history during the World Snooker Championship greets you, and rather nice it is too.

After Hazel Irvine had done her intro piece inside the Crucible for the semi finals, she headed back to Winter Gardens and presented the coverage for BBC2, chatting to Stephen Hendry and later Steve Davis.

She's as professional as ever here and relatively relaxed chatting to Stephen Hendry about his decision not to retire.

The wall of modern snooker world champions

Alongside the walls of the Crucible Theatre are two large posters which commemorate the former snooker world champions.

The second rectangular winner has the winners since 1981, so the likes of Steve Davis, Dennis Taylor, Joe Johnson, Stephen Hendry, John Parrott, Ken Doherty, John Higgins, Mark Williams, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Peter Ebdon, Graeme Dott, Shaun Murphy and Neil Robertson are all present and correct.

Stephen Lee was up against John Higgins in the afternoon session and certainly looked a little nervous, so had a cigarette outside to calm the neves a little.

Higgins leads Lee 6-3 after their first session.

Close to one of the main staircases in the Crucible Theatre is a wall which displays the former champions of the world, in the form of a very large poster.

It's pretty much in date order, starting with John Pullman in the top left and Graeme Dott in the top right (multiple champions are in order of their first win).

Stephen Hendry - The Maestro - happy not to retire

On the day Stephen Hendry announced that he wasn't retiring from snooker, he was helping the BBC with their coverage and was chatting to presenter Hazel Irvine.

He seemed quite jovial and was even affording a couple of laughs and smiles whilst chatting.

This was of course taken last year - Stephen announced his retirement on Tuesday 1 May 2012.

Mark Selby had won the first four frames to go 8-4 up against Stephen Hendry.

Stephen Hendry MBE makes a swift exit

Stephen Hendry didn't play so well against Mark Selby, losing the session 7-1 to be 11-5 behind with a session remaining. He even said "I give up" during one frame.

He wanted to leave very quickly and he's just got into the courtesy car to speed off.

Stephen Hendry MBE wasn't playing today, but he was heading to the Crucible to get some practice in before his second round game. He had been shopping and was just on his way to the theatre's stage door.

Stephen Lee said hello to the waiting fans at the Crucible as he was due to face Stephen Maguire in the conclusion of their first round match (Maguire won 10-4)

He certainly looked like he'd put more weight on since I last saw him in a tournament.

Danny Sturridge had numerous chances to seal the game for Manchester City after he came off the bench. Thankfully Stephen Ireland gave him a chance he couldn't miss to make it 4-2 in stoppage time.

Here, Sturridge is mobbed by Gelson Fernandes and Nedum Onouha and you can just spot their keeper Scott Carson not looking very pleased.

City press forward in the second half at 2-1 down and looking for an equaliser. It looks like Richard Dunne is scratching his head for ideas!

Note also the horrible dayglo orange goalkeeper kit of Petr Cech, and you thought City's orange third kit was bad?

Before every Premier League game, the handshake takes place between the two teams, usually to some naff music. Manchester City captain Richard Dunne is about to shake hands with Chelsea captain John Terry, with other City players following.

In the 13th minute, City were awarded a free kick, and referee Mark Halsey is insisting that the Chelsea players go back ten yards. It looks like it could be Robinho to take the free kick.
