Valley of Fire is the oldest and largest state park in Nevada. It gets its name from the red sandstone formations that are visible everywhere. This sunrise image was made in the area of the Fire Wave.

Calf Creek Falls is off the famous Hole-in-the-Rock road in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Utah. A two-mile hike along a maintained trail leads to this colorful waterfall, standing amidst sculpted canyon walls and lush greenery. The waterfall plunges 150 feet into a green pool surrounded by sand.

Zebra Canyon is located off the famous Hole-in-the-Rock Road of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Utah. The short 300 foot canyon is extremely narrow and twisty, creating a tunnel effect with sandstone lines and shapes. This black-and-white image emphasizes these patterns.

Sunset Arch is near Forty Mile Ridge off the famous Hole-in-the Rock Road of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Utah. The arch can be reached by hiking one mile south of the very bumpy Forty Mile Ridge Road. Moonset Arch is also visible near the center of the frame.

Dry Fork Coyote Gulch is located in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Utah. The gulch includes several beautiful slot canyons, including Spooky Canyon shown in this image. This slot canyon is extremely narrow, creating a challenge for all but the slimmest of visitors. Sediment grain lines the sandstone walls.

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse is located in Bristol, Maine. It was commissioned in 1827 by John Quincy Adams. It was featured on the Maine Quarter, part of the State Quarter Program issued by the U.S. Mint. Beautiful rock formations lie just below the lighthouse, which is frequently included in photographs of the lighthouse. This 84-minute star trail was made late evening, as the full moon lit the rocks and lighthouse structures.

Marginal Way is a scenic cliff-walk in Ogunquit, Maine. In the Abenaki vernacular, Ogunquit means "beautiful place by the sea". The coast with the granite cliffs still lives up to that title assigned long ago. Marginal Way faces east, making a perfect sunrise location. This image was made from a small cove bordered by granite rocks.

Hazard Rocks is the unofficial name for coastal rocks that lie at the end of Hazard Avenue in Narragansett, Rhode Island. The rocks can be dangerous at high tide, hence the designation. This image was made as the sun crested the horizon.

Beavertail Point is located at the southern tip of Conanicut Island in Jamestown, Rhode Island. Lighthouses have stood here since 1705, with the present lighthouse dating back to 1856. The rocky point is exposed to strong wind and surf, but on this calm April night, the only motion was in the stars. The Milky Way can be seen rising south to southeast amidst bountiful stars.

View of the Myrdalsjokull glacier across ice-covered lake. This innocent-looking mountain is one of the most threatening in Iceland. Underneath the icecap lies the volcano Katla, which is overdue to erupt. An eruption will melt the glacier, causing massive flooding along the south coast.

This sunrise image was made from a promontory on the coast near Vik in southern Iceland. The sea stacks in the distance lie below the mountain of Reynisfjall, near the lava columns of Reynisdrangar.

Svartifoss is a waterfall in Skaftafell National Park in the southeast of Iceland. Its name translates to Black Falls because of the black basalt columns around it. This image was made in March when large icicles clung precariously to the cliff.
