We ended up going here for dinner and this same man ended up being our waiter. In true northern Italian fashion, we waited and waited for him to bring our drinks and food. At one point I asked him, "Please?" He turned and looked at me and said in his best, practiced English, "Relax. You are on vacation."

It became the mantra for the rest of our time in Italy.

My pasta with anchovies here was the best dish I had in Italy. It was amazing. And those anchovies were probably why I couldn't swim in the sea... too many little fishies to see at my feet and ankles while my head said, "Hey, I think I ate some of you last night."

Parting is such sweet sorrow! And at a train station no less. There are times in Italy where you begin to lose track of what decade you're in.

On our way to Porto Venere, not knowing where we were going or what it would look like when we got there, we got off at Le Grazie instead. We walked around for a good half hour before I got up the courage to ask someone where our hotel was.

"Hotel Belvedere? That's in Porto Venere. You're in Le Grazie." So back on the bus we went... eventually finding our way.

But who wouldn't want to travel with someone who smiles at you and finds it pretty darn amusing, too?

And in this direction you'll find all the little towns of the Cinque Terre, full of Rick Steves' reading American tourists. In Porto Venere, though, nothing but Italians and an occasional German (with trekking poles!).
