A custom set for the amazing and tentacular Erika Moen.

A fun and harrowing project to do! these are only my second go at polymer clay 3-D embellishment on nails. Totally would approach the process differently next time, but so fun nonetheless.

I was a little stressed because they're to go with an amazing mask and Erika herself is super-duper so I didn't want to eff anything up.

The inventive Motoko Kano worked her senior project around the idea of introducing her native Japanese cultural history to the modern eye through shoes. Since we all need shoes, and people tend to take a special interest in them, even if they have bits of history in. The shoes were made from her design. They are just a shade under ten centimetres long.

The 'bow' is furoshiki, a traditional way of wrapping and tying cloth around gifts and things. The dangly bits are inspired by kanzashi, traditional hair ornaments.

Ingredients: mat board, brass (to strengthen the heel), acetate, Egyptian cotton, polymer clay, dye, acrylic paint, wire, string and glue.
Why we size paper

B_Zedan posted a photo:

The paper on the left had external sizing applied, the paper on the right is raw as it came from the mold.

One way to do external sizing (I'll do pictures of the process later):

-1 packet unflavoured gelatine
-a little over 1 cup water

1. Put water in saucepan, dump gelatine in and let it 'swell' for ten minutes.
2. Bring mixture to almost-boil, bring down to simmer.
3. Using a brush or a sponge, apply to one or both sides of paper, swiping across.
4. With something in between sheets so they don't stick, press to remove any excess sizing.
5. Hang sheets on a line with a slight bow across the top, as they shrink some, or dry on a surface like a window or something.

I ironed mine when they were dry to get everybody flat again.

I love how many sheets I can fit on one felt. It makes me feel super productive.

Another beauty is that I was able to easily make the paper hot press with an iron on 'cotton' setting. I ran it over the paper (sandwiched between two fine-grained felts) until it was nearly dry, then stacked it and pressed it for the final bit.

I'm hoping that hot pressing will make for a more delicate final texture and fit proportionately with the scale of the sheet.
