For some reason, the local franchise owner or McDonald's corporate decided the 1990s retro-themed model is out, and the boring, fairly ugly new stacked-rock-over-mocha-siding style is in. The sweet sign survives... for now.

The new owners of the house (thankfully) have cleaned it up, and restored some of the original decorative pieces of the house, painted it a clean beige, and added the deck. It looks really sharp.

There's a house in Easton, Mass., that means a lot to me and all of my family. That house is located at the end of a short little road named "Bridge Street" because it's the first neighborhood road outside of downtown North Easton to arch over the railroad tracks rather than meet them.

In the middle of the last century, my great-grandfather bought this house and he, his wife, and their children moved in and called this house "home" for about 60 years, until his death. He operated the little building to the right as a "package store," selling local and Portuguese brews and wines to the people of the Easton area until the 1980s when he retired from the business. The store has been vacant since. I have fond memories of being a small boy, completely amused by the dual staircases--one beautiful grand staircase inside the front door and another, inconspicuous rear stair off the kitchen. I remember the big dinners we had on Thanksgiving there, with Portuguese sides and desserts. I vividly remember going to midnight Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church in North Easton, then most of the huge family would meet at this house, filling all the rooms with conversation and holiday cheer, awaiting the arrival of the Portuguese band. They'd begin singing outside the front door, making their way into the house, with an accordion, guitar, tambourine, and other musical instruments, singing songs I couldn't understand (until they sang Feliz Navidad). The house smelled of Portuguese cooking, sounded like Portuguese holiday celebration, and is my favorite memory of Christmas to this day.

Just to the left of this shot is Baldwin St, named for the people who sold my family this house and had owned the area now populated by dozens of homes and an elderly housing community. The white house just past the garage is where my great uncle lives. Just to the right and down the hill in the yard behind the store is where the railroad passes through. It hasn't been an active line since the 60s, but is scheduled to be restored by the MBTA and connect Easton to Boston again.
