Darryclare Lough is a picturesque lake in Connemara, situated along the N59 from Galway to Clifden. It has an island with a fine stand of mature pine trees. Since there are no other trees in the nearby area it makes it stand out nicely.

Derryclare Mtn. is a majestic mountain situated at the finish (or start) of the Glencoaghan Horseshoe route in the Twelve Bens. It commands a fine view over the mountains of the Glencoaghan Valley, as well as the myriad of lakes in the plains of Connemara. Its distinctive sharp southern ridge is visible from the N59 Galway – Clifden road, making it a very popular backdrop for suitably impressed tourists. Derryclare is formed from quartzite and its upper slopes are comprised of shattered rock

One of Ireland’s most photographed castles.
Sitting on a cliff top in north County Antrim, it is really a spectacular sight.
I used a halloweenish filter to give it a gothic look.

The other day it promised to be a fine evening. So I loaded camera and dog in the car and went out to find a different view point for the cliffs. I had seen photos from here before but I had never been there myself. As it turned out it’s a great spot to get a different view for the whole length of the cliffs.

It was really calm and the light was lovely. THere were views of the cliffs and all the way to Kerry. In the other direction the Aran Islands looked close enough to touch and in the north the coast of Connemara and the Twelve Bens were bathed in evening light.

I love trawling through my older photos. I always find something I had forgotten about or a a shot I had meant to 'develop' but ever did.

This picture of wind turbines in the Marsch was taken near my home in northern Germany which I took in the sumer of 2010.

Cruinniu na mBad, meaning"Gathering of the Boats", is a festival held in August each year, which brings us back in time, to when the Galway Hookers, once the workhorses of the coast of Connemara and North Clare, used to transport turf / peat to Kinvara.

Biokarst on the Flaggy Shore

Last weekend I took a walk along the ‘Flaggy Shore’, in County Clare, near our home. The Flaggy Shore is famous for its limestone pavements, glacial erratics and striations and the fossils that can be spotted here embedded in the rock. Most interesting for me are the bizzarely sculptured rocks along the shore, called Biokarst.

“Biokarst” forms on limestone coasts and refers to the bizzarely sculptured and corroded limestone structures produced by combined activities of microbial endoliths (bioerrosion), largely cyanobacteria, and their grazers: gastropods, polyplacophors and, in lower intertidal ranges, sea urchins (biological abrasion).

For this image I use my 10 stop B+W ND 110 Filter.. and a tripod for the 15 second exposure.
