Old Main Bridge & Fortress Marienberg, Würzburg

HaukeSteinberg.com posted a photo:

Clare and myself went to Germany for a few days in October. We Visited Frankfurt and and then stayed a few days in Würzburg. The Old Main Bridge and the Fortress Marienberg are two of the main sights there. I didn't have a tripod with me for this shot and had to use my backpack to create a stable platform for the long exposure.

The Würzburg's Old Main Bridge (Alte Mainbrücke) was built 1473–1543 to replace the destroyed Romanesque bridge from 1133. It was adorned from 1730 on in two phases with well-known statues of saints and famous persons. A similar impressive bridge is the Charles Bridge in Prague.

Fortress Marienberg (German: Festung Marienberg) is a prominent landmark on the Main river in Würzburg, Germany. The mighty Fortress Marienberg is the symbol of Würzburg and served as a home of the prince-bishops for nearly five centuries. It has been a fort since ancient times. After Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden conquered the area in 1631, the castle was reconstructed in the Baroque style. Today, it is a park and museum.
