Snorkeling with the D300 was a scary experience, but I really like how some of the photos came out as opposed to the Canon P&S. This is one of them - with the little ocean bokeh bubbles in the background of some happy fish swimming along.

Nearing the end of our trip, we had dinner with some new friends at Shark's Cove Grill which sits across the street from Shark's Cove and Pupukea Beach Park on the North Shore of Oahu. As I was eating my wonderful skewers I looked up, dropped my food, excused myself from the table and headed across Kamehameha Hwy with my camera. Mother nature was putting on a show that night.

Although I love the natural rays and palm trees, this shot was tough to process because of camera shake from shooting hand held (after running) and the blue cast in the left of the frame almost made me toss it completely. Anyhow - here it is. I hope you like it!

With Fall in full effect and the change of colors upon us here in Utah, I decided that I better get out and capture some of the beauty.
Squaw Peak is a bench of the Cascade Mountains and is just south of Timpanogos from Provo Canyon. The view of Utah Valley from here is incredible (more to come on that), but here is the last light for the day, another gorgeous sunset over Utah.
A gorgeous sunset though, taken through the Quaking Aspen (populus tremuloides). What a show!

To me, it's a toss-up between Aoki's Shave Ice and Matsumoto's Shave Ice. The establishments are right next to each other, giving tourists and locals the opportunity to go to which ever has the shortest line. In terms of wait time, it can be from just a few minutes to 45 minutes during a rush. Of the two, Aoki's typically has the shortest line, as Matsumoto's is definitely more popular.

Pictured is a large rainbow flavored shave ice (strawberry, lemon, pineapple) from Aoki's with vanilla ice cream at the bottom.

What's your favorite flavors?

The North Shore in Haleiwa is certainly beautiful! One place that you've got to see when you're here is Sunset Beach. The water is clear, warm, and the sunsets are like fireworks.

A first attempt to capture a few hummingbirds. We have a feeder in the backyard, and while shooting with my Nikkor 50mm 1.4 D and tripod, I was able to get close enough to not scare away this lone bird.
I obviously have some practicing to do - as I would have liked better lighting around the eye/neck area. But - as a first pass, this was a lot of fun! I have my eye on a 70-200mm 2.8 in the future, which will certainly help.

Well, not "the" last sunset, but close to one of the last that I took while staying on the North Shore. Being a visitor for a short time on the North Shore, the environment is idyllic, and I can't imagine it any other way. I'm sure it gets a lot busier in terms of traffic, than what we have experienced. But when your surfing, laying out in the sun, snorkeling, or eating good food in paradise - It's All Good!

Which reminds me - Check out Jack Johnson's, "You and Your Heart" when you get a chance.

Besides watching the turtles, seals, playing at the beach surfing, snorkeling, collecting shells, heading into town to eat shave ice, or having fun on the North Shore doing all of the other things available, we love to hike.

Maunawili Falls is about 25 minutes from Honolulu up Pali Hwy, and a gem of a hike for the whole family. After going through about 45 minutes of following a trail that crosses a stream a few times, takes you over boulders and through the ups and downs of a dirt trail, you're presented with a beautiful waterfall that is a blast to jump off of into a deep pool. Even the kids got into it!

It happens to also be a waterfall featured in Jason Mraz's, "I'm Yours" video. Check it out on YouTube from 1:49 :: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkHTsc9PU2A
Keeping It Green

Turtle/Laniakea Beach is famous for having sea turtles visit during the warm hours of the day to dry themselves out, get some sun and rest up a bit. To tell you the truth, it's not the place to snorkel and see these beautiful creatures in the water, as the waves are usually rough, the current strong, or the visibility is poor in comparison to Shark's Cove, just down the road. But it's possible.

On this particular day, there were three turtles on the beach sunning, and one in the breakers looking for a boyfriend before her 500 mile trip back to the French Frigate Shoals where she'll lay some eggs if she finds a male before then.

I couldn't decide which crop I liked best, so here goes another one below.

As a rest-stop on the 5 mile hike, we stopped and fished as the local "stocked" pond. Although my son was jazzed to be fishing, I don't think the pond had been stocked too recently, as no fish were biting. The pond served me well as a beautiful reflection of the environment though!

This weekend the wife and I are hanging out on Oahu's North Shore. Thanks to Delta and lots of travel, we've been able to save points and additionally use Delta dollars when I've voluntarily taken other flights when mine was full.
This is a single JPG exposure taken by a new "friend" who was hanging out next to us on the beach.

Scott Barlow posted a photo:

The present Park City ski area opened on December 21, 1963. Originally named Treasure Mountain and operated by the United Park City Mines, it boasted the longest gondola in the U.S., as well as a double chairlift and two J-bar surface lifts.

When the slopes opened to the public, skiers were transported nearly 3 miles (5 km) into the mountain on the Spiro Tunnel mine train and then lifted 1800 ft (548 m) to the slopes on a mine hoist elevator. Aerial trams once used for hauling ore were converted into chairlifts. To this day, there are still more than 1000 miles (1609 km) of old silver-mine workings and tunnels beneath the slopes at Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley.
The ski area's name change to Park City came in its fourth season of 1966-67. After seven seasons, the resort was sold by the mining company to Edgar Stern in 1970. (Wikipedia)

Before riding this monster, I snapped five bracketed JPG exposures at the bottom of the Park City Alpine Slide. The family had a fantastic time, and I highly recommend it - fun for just about anyone!

I combined and tonemapped the five exposures in Photomatix, edited in Photoshop for color, levels and smoothing, and applied a few Topaz filters for exposure and contrast. GPS info was added in iPhoto.

Hope you're having a great week!

Take Disneyland at lightspeed with the Star Tours attraction in Tomorrowland. Although I think the attraction is a bit dated, my kids don't care. It's one on ther top 5 I'd have to guess.

Pictured here is RX-24 or REX the robot stepping on the StarSpeeder gas to lightspeed after blowing up the Death Star!
Exposure Bias: 0 EV

Fun Fact:
Star Tours' debut was in 1987, replacing the previous attraction, Adventure Thru Inner Space. It can be found in California (pictured here), Hollywood Studios in Florida, Tokyo, and Paris Disneyland and Disney World Resorts.

The four military-grade flight simulators cost Disney a reported $500,000 each, and when complete, the attraction's cost sat at a whopping $32M - twice that of the entire park when Disneyland was built in 1955. Because of the success of the attraction when opened, Disneyland remained open for a special 60-hour marathon from January 9, 1987 at 10am to January 11, 1987 at 10pm.
